What it is. Free hero shooter. 5v5 role queue. 6v6 Open Queue too. I play Zarya. Zarya guide. Games like Overwatch.

Why it fits. A job on an objective. Terrible if four friends wanted a farm.

Platforms. Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch. Battle.net + Steam.

Price. Free. Premium Battle Pass sold separately.

Who it’s for. Five people who will pick roles.

Pros

• Free, cross-play.
• The practice range is only a warmup.
• Roles are readable.

Cons

• No co-op chaos like a cooking or ship game.
• SMS + Battle.net account.
• It is not a co-op campaign.

World of Warcraft (rated BGs / Blitz)

What it is. Subscription MMO. Devastation Evoker, EU-Ravencrest, 2849 Blitz. Evoker PvP guide. World of Warcraft: visit official site.

Why it fits. Ten people on a node. Needs a character and a sub.

Minecraft (the server I keep)

What it is. Java Edition. My pack is 1.21.1 on NeoForge: Create 6.0.10, Aeronautics, Big Cannons, Iron’s Spellbooks, Apotheosis, YUNG’s, When Dungeons Arise, Sodium + Iris, JEI, Jade. Create Aeronautics modpack. Best Minecraft mods.

Why it fits. The world you leave open. Minecraft is the session that is still there on Sunday.

Platforms. Java: Windows, macOS, Linux. Bedrock is a different product.

Price. Java is a paid client (sold with Bedrock on Mojang’s PC store as a bundle). A server is extra. Realms Java is $7.99/month on minecraft.net and is not NeoForge.

Who it’s for. Friends who will share one loader and one version.

Pros

• The world I actually run.
• Mods are the content.
• Session length is “until you close it.”

Cons

• Realms cannot run this pack.
• Everyone needs the same jars (we use the Modrinth App).
• A host that only offers “ATM10” one-click is a different product.

Tingbase

What it is. 3v3 hero shooter. Tank, DPS, Healer. Arenas, deathmatch, co-op waves. Wishlist on Steam.

Why it fits. The session I am building. Co-op waves are the shared-job half; arenas are the PvP half.

Who it’s for. People who want a smaller team later, not tonight.

Pros

Helldivers 2

What it is. Arrowhead / PlayStation Publishing. Third-person co-op shooter. Steam lists $39.99. Released 8 February 2024. Typically 4 players. Friendly fire, stratagems, a galactic war. Crossplay with PlayStation on the product’s own pitch.

Why it fits. Everyone has a job, and the chaos is the fun.

Platforms. Windows (Steam), PlayStation 5, and later Xbox notes.

Price. $39.99 on Steam. Super Citizen Edition bundle $59.99.

Who it’s for. Four friends who will laugh when a stratagem hits the squad.

Pros

• Co-op is the whole game.
• Crossplay with PlayStation.
• Updates keep adding enemies and weapons — Arrowhead’s live model.

Cons

• Friendly fire is the joke and the wipe.
• Paid. A 40 GB-class download on a weeknight can eat the session before anyone drops.

Crossplay with PlayStation is the reason a mixed living room can launch this when Overwatch’s Battle.net gate would have stopped them. PSN linking has been part of the PC install conversation since launch. Stratagems are called from a pad or a key sequence — that is the skill, not a hidden hero ult.

Fortnite

What it is. Epic. Free. BR plus other rooms. Zero Build is the fork that saves a mixed group.

Why it fits. Easy for new friends to pick up.

Platforms. PC, consoles, Switch, mobile.

Price. Free.

Who it’s for. Anyone who will not buy a game.

What it is. Rare / Xbox. Shared ship, other crews on the same sea. Sold on Steam / Microsoft Store; Game Pass has carried it.

Why it fits. The same-voice pirate session. Crew up, sail, and argue about who steers.

Price. Paid, or included in Game Pass.

Who it’s for. A crew of 2–4 that will talk.

What it is. Valve. Four people, one horde. Campaign, then versus.

Why it fits. The classic co-op shooter that still holds up.

Price. Paid, and often on sale on Steam.

Who it’s for. Four friends for a campaign.

• One goal.
• Versus is a second mode.
• Cheap.

• 2009 campaign bones.
• Versus needs eight, not four.

Apex Legends

What it is. Respawn / EA. Free. Squads, legends, a ring.

Why it fits. The free trio BR.

• Kits.
• Free.
• Ranked exists.

Cons

• Dead is usually dead.
• Fourth friend sits out.

How to pick in five minutes

Write three facts before anyone opens a store page.

1. Headcount. Two people can launch Valheim or It Takes Two. Three is Apex. Four is Helldivers 2 or Left 4 Dead 2. Five is Overwatch role queue or CS2. Six is Marvel Rivals. Ten is a Blitz raid group, not a Discord pickup.
2. Money. If nobody will pay, the free column is Overwatch, CS2, Valorant, Fortnite, Marvel Rivals, Rocket League, Apex, Warzone. Minecraft Java is a paid client. Helldivers 2 is $39.99 on Steam. Battlefield 6 was $69.99 Standard at launch. WoW is $14.99/month on the US 1-month plan.
3. Length. Most quick matches run about half an hour. Civilization and a Create world do not. If someone has to leave at 10, do not generate a new continent.

A mixed-skill group usually has more fun in a shared job or a readable sport than in Premier CS2. I would not start a friend in rated Blitz on my Evoker build. I would start them in Overwatch quick play, Rocket League, or the Minecraft world if they already have Java.

Cross-play is not one switch. Overwatch and Fortnite and Rocket League are built for mixed platforms. Valorant is not, between PC and consoles. Minecraft Java does not play with Bedrock. Realms does not run NeoForge. Read the client, not the genre tag.

Install time matters more than a ranking. The game everyone already has installed beats the better one that is still downloading at 40 GB. My Battle.net Overwatch and my NeoForge folder are already there. That is why those are the sessions I actually start.

• My world: Minecraft on NeoForge 1.21.1 — not Realms.
