A competitive FPS is a first-person shooter where the other team is trying to win the round. If you want co-op, check the multiplayer list. For everything else, see the PvP list. Only shooters here.
The usual picks are CS2, Valorant, Overwatch, THE FINALS and Deadlock. I play Zarya at Master in Overwatch.

The one I play
Overwatch
What it is. Free hero shooter. 5v5 role queue. 6v6 Open Queue continued in Blizzard’s Season 16 Director’s Take. Battle.net + Steam. You need a phone number on your account.
Why it fits. A job on an objective. I play Zarya at Master; my Zarya guide has my settings.
Platforms. Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch.
Price. Free. Premium Battle Pass sold separately (~$10 / 1,000 coins at launch).
Who it’s for. Players who want a role, not five identical rifles.
Pros
- Knowing your role matters more than raw aim.
- The range is a warmup I actually use.
- Cross-play between PC and console.
Cons
- No bomb-site rounds.
- Overwatch aim doesn’t carry over to a CS2 AWP.
- Heroes can sit behind a gate.
Tingbase
What it is. 3v3 hero shooter, hotbar combat. Tank, DPS, Healer. Arenas, deathmatch, co-op waves. Steam 4086630. Unity 6, C#.
Why it fits. The gun game I am building. Not a public ladder.
Platforms. PC / Windows.
Price. Wishlist / coming soon.
Who it’s for. People who want a smaller team and a hotbar.
Pros
- Roles on the Steam page.
- 3v3 is a different round size.
- I’m building it, so I know exactly how it plays.
Cons
- Not out yet. Wishlist it on Steam to get notified.
- Co-op waves are PvE.
Bomb site
Counter-Strike 2
What it is. Valve, free on Steam. 5v5 bomb. No agents. Economy, smokes, a position you cannot erase with an ult. Millions play it every day.
Why play it. Still the benchmark tactical shooter.
Platforms. PC (Steam).
Price. Free.
Who it’s for. Players who want aim and utility, no kits.
Pros
- Identical toolkits.
- Free, enormous Steam chart.
- Source 2 smokes react to shots — Valve’s own pitch.
Cons
- Steep, and the cheat conversation is public.
- No official console.
Premier and Faceit-style third-party queues sit beside matchmaking. Utility is the second skill: a smoke that opens or closes a site is why Clark stays here and why a Zarya warmup does not transfer.
Valorant
What it is. Riot, free. 5v5, agents, buy phase. PC, PS5, Xbox Series. No PC–console crossplay.
Why it fits. The other site game. Caruso-style lists have put it first; Clark calls it the easier start.
Platforms. PC, PS5, Xbox Series.
Price. Free.
Who it’s for. Players who want a kit and a plant.
Pros
- Shared gun pool.
- Agents are jobs.
- Console exists.
Cons
- One life.
- Not Overwatch’s respawn.
Rainbow Six Siege X
What it is. Ubisoft. 5v5 attack / defense. Siege X 10 June 2025. Free Access: Quick Match, Unranked, Dual Front. Ranked paid. Rainbow Six Siege X: Steam page.
Why it fits. The building. A drone, a soft floor, a reinforce.
Platforms. PC, Xbox, PlayStation.
Price. Free Access; Ranked unlock paid.
Who it’s for. Five people who will drone.
Pros
- Space is the fight.
- Free door.
- Dual Front is 6v6 on current-gen / PC.
Cons
- Operator knowledge is the wall.
- Slower than a payload.
Large map and short duel
Battlefield 6
What it is. EA. Launched 10 October 2025 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam, EA App, Epic). Standard Edition USD $69.99; Phantom Edition $99.99 on EA’s launch pricing. Classes, vehicles, destruction. Battlefield vs Call of Duty.
Why it fits. The wide fight. 32 players a side, with vehicles and buildings coming down.
Platforms. PS5, Xbox Series, PC.
Price. $69.99 Standard at launch.
Who it’s for. A group that wants a front and a vehicle.
Pros
- Scale the 5v5 games do not have.
- Destruction leaves a scar.
- Current entry, not 2042.
Cons
- Paid.
- Team balance can swing a match — that is the product, not a bug I measured.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
What it is. Treyarch / Raven, Activision. Launched 25 October 2024. Omnimovement. Activision listed 16 maps at launch: 12 core 6v6 and 4 Strike. Short respawn, not 32-a-side.
Why it fits. The fast duel. Warzone is the free cousin, not this SKU.
Platforms. Current and last-gen consoles plus PC on Activision’s launch list.
Price. Paid. Game Pass has carried it on lists; catalogs move.
Who it’s for. Players who want a 10-minute respawn, not a bomb half.
Pros
- Short maps, fast restart.
- 16 named launch maps.
- Same gun family as Warzone.
Cons
- Large install.
- Store / battle pass is the live model.
Shrinking map
Apex Legends
What it is. Respawn / EA. Free. Squads, legends, a ring. Ranked exists.
Why it fits. Competitive lists keep a BR with kits.
Platforms. PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch.
Price. Free.
Who it’s for. A trio.
Pros
- Legends are jobs.
- Movement ceiling.
- Free ranked.
Cons
- Dead is usually dead.
- No bomb-site rounds.
PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS
What it is. Krafton. Free on Steam. The plainer gun, the same circle.
Why it fits. The BR without a legend.
Platforms. PC (Steam). Console SKUs exist separately.
Price. Free on Steam.
Who it’s for. Players who want the rifle and the circle.
Pros
- Gun identity.
- Still high on Steam PvP charts on SteamDB.
- Free.
Cons
- Older loop.
Fortnite
What it is. Epic. Free. Build or Zero Build. Ranked exists in the BR.
Why it fits. The BR a mixed group can launch.
Platforms. PC, consoles, Switch, mobile.
Price. Free.
Who it’s for. Friends who will not buy a game.
Pros
- Zero Build.
- Free everywhere.
- Ranked is a real playlist.
Cons
- Build is a second game.
- Not first-person in the default view.
Call of Duty: Warzone
What it is. Activision. Free. Gulag. Separate from BO6 multiplayer.
Why it fits. The free Call of Duty ranked BR.
Platforms. PC, PlayStation, Xbox.
Price. Free.
Who it’s for. A squad that wants a second life.
Pros
- Gulag.
- Free.
- Same guns as the paid game.
Cons
- Huge download.
- Not a 5v5 site.
Other ranked gun games
THE FINALS
What it is. Embark / Nexon. Free. Destruction. Cashout as 3v3v3 on Unstore. Playstyles, not a locked hero.
Why it fits. Choost’s 2026 competitive FPS shortlist keeps it.
Platforms. PC, PS5, Xbox Series.
Price. Free.
Who it’s for. A trio that wants the floor to move.
Pros
- Destruction is the round.
- Free.
- Short squad.
Cons
- No bomb-site rounds.
- Smaller chart than CS2.
Halo Infinite
What it is. 343 / Xbox. Free multiplayer. Arena and Big Team Battle. Campaign sold separately.
Why it fits. The Xbox arena ranked list. Sandbox, not a roster.
Platforms. Xbox, Windows, Steam.
Price. Free multiplayer.
Who it’s for. A group on Xbox’s ecosystem.
Pros
- Free arena.
- Objectives without a hero pass.
- BTB is a different scale.
Cons
- No Zarya.
- The kit is the floor weapon.
Delta Force
What it is. TiMi / Team Jade. Free client on the storefronts 2025–2026 lists cite. Warfare mode compared to Battlefield at 32v32. Operations is the extraction playlist. Console launch notes in 2025 widened it.
Why it fits. Caruso-style lists slotted it as the newer large-map / extract hybrid.
Platforms. PC and consoles.
Price. Free to play.
Who it’s for. Players who want a large map and an extract option in one install.
Pros
- Two queues in one client.
- Free entry.
- Scale CS2 does not have.
Cons
- Two modes is also two tutorials.
FragPunk
What it is. NetEase. Free. 6 March 2025. PC, PS5, Xbox Series. Shard Cards per round. Closer to Valorant than to a payload.
Why it fits. A current free 5v5 with kits and a mutating rule.
Platforms. PC, PS5, Xbox Series.
Price. Free.
Who it’s for. Players who want agents and a card vote.
Pros
- Shard Cards are named.
- Free, consoles included.
- Fast TTK.
Cons
- Not Overwatch.
- Another NetEase shooter beside Rivals.
How to pick the round
Competitive FPS lists disagree because they are scoring different rounds. Clark stays on CS2. Caruso-style lists have put Valorant first. Large-map writers send you to Battlefield 6. Hero-objective writers keep Overwatch. BR writers keep Apex.
Write the round in one line before you install two clients.
- One life, a site, no kits: Counter-Strike 2. Free. PC only.
- One life, a site, kits: Valorant. Free. PC or console, not mixed.
- One life, a building: Siege X. Free Access; Ranked paid.
- Respawn, a job, a cart: Overwatch. Free. That is the one I play.
- Respawn, short map: Black Ops 6. Paid. 16 launch maps.
- Respawn, a front, vehicles: Battlefield 6. $69.99 Standard at launch (10 October 2025).
- The map shrinks: Apex (kits), PUBG (plain gun), Fortnite (Zero Build), Warzone (Gulag). All free except the time they take.
- The floor moves: THE FINALS. Free.
- Xbox sandbox: Halo Infinite multiplayer. Free.
- Large map + extract in one install: Delta Force. Free client on the pages I cited.
Warmup follows the round. My warmup is the Overwatch range at 1200 DPI. That will not teach you a CS2 smoke or a Siege drone. Aim training is the range first, then one Aimlabs or KovaaK drill if you still want a second tool.
Anti-cheat and account gates are part of the product. Overwatch wants a Battle.net account and a phone number. Valorant and League share Riot’s Vanguard conversation on PC. Read the store page for the anti-cheat name the day you install.
A ranked ladder is not a personality. I have a Master border in Overwatch and a 2849 in WoW Blitz. Neither is a Premier rank. Do not treat a blog’s first place as a transfer.
Opening one tonight

Common questions
What is a competitive FPS game?
It's a first-person shooter where you play against other players to win rounds or objectives, usually with a ranked mode. Think Counter-Strike 2, Valorant and Overwatch.
What competitive FPS do you play?
Overwatch, mostly as Zarya at Master rank. I'm also building Tingbase, a 3v3 hero shooter.
What is the best competitive FPS game in 2026?
It depends on the kind of match you want. Pick Counter-Strike 2 or Valorant for tactical 5v5 rounds, Overwatch for hero team fights on objectives, Battlefield 6 for big maps, or Apex and Fortnite for battle royale.
Should I play Counter-Strike 2 or Valorant?
Choose Valorant if you like character abilities on top of gunplay, and CS2 if you want pure gunplay with a deeper weapon economy. Both are free 5v5 bomb-site games, so you can try both.
Which competitive FPS games are free?
Most of the big ones are free: Counter-Strike 2, Valorant, Overwatch, Apex Legends, PUBG, Fortnite, Warzone, THE FINALS and Halo Infinite multiplayer. Battlefield 6 and Black Ops 6 are paid.
Is a battle royale a competitive FPS?
Yes. Apex, PUBG, Fortnite and Warzone have ranked modes and gunfights, so they count, though a shrinking map plays very differently from a bomb-site or payload game.
