Love Overwatch but want something new to play? A game like Overwatch is a team match where each player brings a character with abilities, and the other team is trying to take an objective. If you’re after bomb rounds, check the competitive FPS list, and for co-op try the multiplayer page. This guide is all about heroes, abilities and objectives.
Most rankings, like GameSpot’s and Unstore’s, lead with Marvel Rivals, then list Team Fortress 2, Paladins, Valorant, Siege, Apex, THE FINALS, FragPunk, and Deadlock. I play Zarya at Master in Overwatch. I am building Tingbase in Unity 6 C#. How YuvalGG reviews. Zarya guide.
| Game | Format | Price (official) | Closest Overwatch piece |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overwatch | 5v5 role / 6v6 open | Free (Battle Pass sold separately) | The one I play — Zarya |
| Tingbase | 3v3 hotbar | Steam wishlist (4086630) | The one I am building |
| Marvel Rivals | 6v6 third person | Free | Hero + objective + team-up |
| Team Fortress 2 | 9 classes, payload | Free | Older class shooter |
| Paladins | 5v5 + cards | Free (Champions Pack paid) | Roles + payload + loadout |
| Valorant | 5v5 one-life | Free | Agents, not a payload |
| Siege X | 5v5 building | Free Access; Ranked paid | Operators, not heroes |
| THE FINALS | 3v3v3 destruction | Free | Objective that can collapse |
| Apex Legends | Squad BR | Free | Kits, not a cart |
| FragPunk | 5v5 + shard cards | Free | Abilities + one life |
| Deadlock | 6v6 lanes | Valve playtest / Steam | Hero kits in a MOBA |
| Splitgate: Arena Reloaded | Arena + portals | Free | Movement, not a job |
| Halo Infinite | Arena / BTB | Free multiplayer | Sandbox, not a roster |
| Strinova | Tactical + paper form | Free | Agents, anime camera |
| Heroes of the Storm | MOBA | Free | Blizzard heroes, top-down |
The two I can write from
Overwatch
What it is. Blizzard’s free team-based hero shooter. Battle.net’s product page lists Windows, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. It is also on Steam (app 2357570). A Battle.net account and a linked mobile phone number are required. 5v5 role queue is the default ranked shape. Blizzard’s Season 16 Director’s Take said 6v6 Open Queue (max two tanks) would continue in Quick Play and Competitive.
Why it fits. This is the reference, not an alternative. I play Zarya: beam, bubbles, grav. Warmup is the range, then queue. I match my sensitivity across games with the sensitivity tool. Aim training. How Overwatch roles differ.
Platforms. Windows, Xbox One / Series, PlayStation 4 / 5, Switch, Steam + Battle.net. Cross-play and cross-progression on Blizzard’s page.
Price. Free to play. Battle.net: “Premium Battle Pass sold separately.” Launch notes priced the Premium Pass at 1,000 Overwatch Coins per season (then equivalent to USD $10). Invasion story missions are a separate purchase.
Who it’s for. Anyone who wants a job on a cart or a point, and who will learn one hero.
Pros
- Roles are readable: tank, damage, support.
- The range is a real warmup. I use it.
- Cross-play means a mixed-platform group can queue.
Cons
- New heroes can sit behind playtime or a purchase (Blizzard’s own footnote).
- A Battle.net account plus SMS is friction Steam-only players do not expect.
- The live balance is a long way from the 2016 game.
Tingbase
What it is. The 3v3 hero shooter I am building. MMO-style hotbar combat. Tank, DPS, or Healer. PvP arenas, deathmatch, and co-op waves. Unity 6, C#. Steam.
Why it fits. It is a hero team fight with roles. It is not a 5v5 payload clone. The edit loop is Unity and Cursor.
Platforms. PC / Windows on the Steam listing.
Price. Wishlist / coming soon on Steam.
Who it’s for. People who want a smaller team and a hotbar. Not a ladder you can queue tonight.
Pros
- Roles are Tank, DPS, Healer — the same triangle Overwatch taught me.
- 3v3 is a different size from 5v5 and 6v6.
- I can tell you how the project is edited.
Cons
- Not a public ranked queue.
- Not an Overwatch map pack.
- Modes are only what the Steam page lists.
Closest named product
Marvel Rivals
What it is. NetEase’s free Super Hero team PvP shooter. Official launch notes (5–6 December 2024): Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Epic Games Store, and the official site. 6v6. Third person. Team-up abilities between specific heroes. Destructible maps. Season 0 launched with 33 heroes, all unlocked and free.
Why it fits. GameSpot (Cameron Koch, 27 May 2025) and Unstore’s 2026 ranking both call this the closest swap. The shape is a hero roster on an objective. Third person and team-ups are the parts Overwatch does not copy.
Platforms. PC (Steam, Epic), PS5, Xbox Series X|S. Cross-platform multiplayer on Steam’s feature list.
Price. Free to play. Cosmetic shop and season pass exist. Heroes were free at launch “and beyond” on Marvel’s own article.
Who it’s for. A group that wants six people on a point and will not pay first.
Pros
- Default 6v6, which Overwatch now treats as an alternate queue.
- Team-ups reward a pair the Overwatch roster does not lock that way.
- All-hero unlock at launch is the opposite of a grind gate.
Cons
- Third person changes the peek. It is not Zarya’s first-person beam.
- Cross-play can mix input methods; Unstore flags that as a debit.
More worth trying
Team Fortress 2
What it is. Valve’s 2007 class shooter. Steam, free. Nine classes. Payload, control points, a map pool that has been iterated for years. GameSpot dates the release to 10 October 2007. Mercy and Torbjörn sit in a conversation people have had with the Medic and the Engineer; that is history, not hours I logged.
Why it fits. It is the older class shooter. A job, a cart, a team. Unstore still files it as 12v12 community-server play.
Platforms. PC and Mac on GameSpot’s card. Steam is the live client.
Price. Free. Cosmetics (hats) do not change class kits on Valve’s long-standing model.
Who it’s for. People who want classes without a battle-pass hero drop.
Pros
- Full nine-class roster with no unlock treadmill.
- Community maps are the depth.
- No gameplay-pay wall on the classes.
Cons
- Visuals and matchmaking are from another decade.
- New players meet muscle memory that is older than Overwatch.
Paladins
What it is. Evil Mojo / Hi-Rez. Free 5v5 hero shooter. Payload, tank / damage / support. Talents and card decks per champion. GameSpot: PC, Switch, Xbox One / Series, PlayStation 4 / 5. Released 16 September 2016.
Why it fits. Same triangle of roles and a cart. The cards are the piece Overwatch does not have: you retune one champion per match.
Platforms. PC (Steam, Epic), Switch, Xbox, PlayStation.
Price. Free, rotating roster. Unstore and Hi-Rez storefronts sell a Champions Pack as a one-time unlock of the cast.
Who it’s for. Players who want a build layer on a hero shooter.
Pros
- Cards are a real difference, not a reskin.
- One-time pack is a clearer unlock than a season treadmill.
- Roles map onto Overwatch habits.
Cons
- GameSpot (May 2025) noted Hi-Rez layoffs and an end of active development on Paladins while servers stayed up.
- Smaller queue than Overwatch or Rivals on the lists I read.
Valorant
What it is. Riot’s free 5v5 tactical shooter. Agents with abilities, a buy phase, one life per round. Released 2 June 2020. PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S. No crossplay between PC and those consoles on the pages I have cited.
Why it fits. A named character with a kit. That is the overlap. The round is a site plant, not a payload. Aim and utility decide more than a beam on a cart.
Platforms. PC, PS5, Xbox Series. Shared inventory / cross-progression on Riot’s notes; not crossplay PC-to-console.
Price. Free. Weapon and agent cosmetics in the shop. Agents unlock through play or purchase.
Who it’s for. Players who want Overwatch’s kits and Counter-Strike’s one life.
Pros
- Readable agent jobs.
- The buy phase is a second game inside the match.
- Console exists if the group is not on PC.
Cons
- Not an objective-respawn brawl.
- A bad opening duel costs the round. Overwatch will spawn you again.
Rainbow Six Siege X
What it is. Ubisoft’s tactical 5v5. Operators, gadgets, a building you open. Siege X launched 10 June 2025 as a free update for owners, plus Free Access. Ubisoft: Quick Match, Unranked, and Dual Front (6v6, current-gen and PC) are in the free tier. Ranked, Siege Cup, extra operators, and cosmetics need a paid unlock.
Why it fits. A named operator with a kit. The kit is a drone and a wall, not a bubble. GameSpot kept it on the Overwatch-likes gallery for that reason.
Platforms. PC, Xbox One / Series, PlayStation 4 / 5. Dual Front is current-gen and PC on Ubisoft’s launch note.
Price. Free Access for listed modes. Paid upgrade for Ranked. Confirm Ubisoft’s current edition list.
Who it’s for. Players who miss information and a timed execute, not a cart.
Pros
- Destruction is the map.
- Free Access is a real door.
- Dual Front is 6v6 if that number is the missing piece — it is still a lane mode, not a hero brawl.
Cons
- Slower and less forgiving than Overwatch.
- If you wanted six named heroes on a point, Marvel Rivals is the closer product.
THE FINALS
What it is. Embark Studios, published by Nexon. Free. Destruction-first arena shooter. Unstore files Cashout as 3v3v3. Playstyles on the pages I have cited: Scout, Medic, Engineer, Guardian — a specialization plus a weapon, not a locked named hero for a season. Modes include Cashout, Power Shift, and Point Break.
Why it fits. An objective that can stop existing when the floor goes. That is the Overwatch “the point matters” feeling with a different verb.
Platforms. PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S. Crossplay listed on later writeups.
Price. Free. Cosmetic seasons.
Who it’s for. Players who want the room to be the plan.
Pros
- Destruction is not a skin; it is the round.
- Short squad size.
- Free client.
Cons
- Not a locked hero identity across a season.
- Smaller player base than Rivals.
Apex Legends
What it is. Respawn / EA. Free hero battle royale. Legends with kits, a shrinking ring, squads. GameSpot: PC, Xbox One / Series, PlayStation 4 / 5, Switch. Released 4 February 2019.
Why it fits. A named kit. That is the only honest overlap. A closing circle is not a payload.
Platforms. PC plus the consoles on GameSpot’s card, including Switch.
Price. Free. Cosmetics and a battle pass.
Who it’s for. A squad that wants movement and a kit, and will accept a BR.
Pros
- Legends are jobs (support, recon, assault) in a different dress.
- Movement is the skill ceiling Respawn is known for.
- Cross-play is wide.
Cons
- Dead is usually dead. Overwatch will walk you back.
- I do not play battle royales for a scored review.
- The ring is the objective, not a cart.
FragPunk
What it is. NetEase. Free. Released 6 March 2025 on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 (GameSpot). Round-based, hero abilities, Shard Cards the team votes on each round.
Why it fits. GameSpot places it closer to Valorant than to a payload: one life, plus a rule that can change before the next round.
Platforms. PC, PS5, Xbox Series.
Price. Free.
Who it’s for. Players who want agent kits and a mutating rule, not a cart.
Pros
- Shard Cards are a named mechanic, not a vibe.
- Free, current-gen consoles included.
- Faster TTK than Overwatch.
Cons
- Not an objective-respawn hero brawl.
- NetEase also ships Rivals; this is the other product, not a sequel.
Deadlock
What it is. Valve’s hero shooter / MOBA hybrid. 6v6 lanes, towers, creeps, hero kits. GameSpot (May 2025) still listed it as not officially out, with thousands in playtests. Steam is the distribution path Valve has used for that playtest.
Why it fits. Named heroes with abilities. The map is three lanes, not King’s Row. Overwatch Stadium (credits, upgrades, third person) is the Blizzard mode people compare.
Platforms. PC.
Price. Valve has not published a final retail SKU. Treat the Steam page as the source the day you click it.
Who it’s for. Players who want hero kits and a lane, and who will accept a playtest.
Pros
- Hero identity plus a MOBA economy.
- Valve’s shooter-MOBA is a real third shape.
- 6v6 matches the Rivals number, not the job.
Cons
- Steeper than Overwatch. Last-hitting is not a beam.
- Access and price can still move.
Splitgate: Arena Reloaded
What it is. 1047 Games’ portal arena shooter. Unstore’s 2026 Overwatch-alternatives table: free, 4v4 arena, portal movement. A sequel / relaunch of the original Splitgate loop: Halo-like guns plus portals.
Why it fits. It’s the loosest “hero” match here. It is here because Unstore ranked it and because movement identity is what some Overwatch players actually miss (Tracer, Lucio, Wrecking Ball). There is no tank/support roster.
Platforms. PC on Unstore’s download line. Confirm consoles on today’s store.
Price. Free to play on that 2026 table.
Who it’s for. Players who miss movement tech more than a named support kit.
Pros
- Portals are a unique verb.
- Arena rounds are short.
- Free.
Cons
- Not a hero-objective game.
- If you wanted Zarya’s job, this will not give it to you.
Halo Infinite
What it is. 343 Industries / Xbox. Arena and Big Team Battle sandbox shooter. Multiplayer is free. Campaign is a separate purchase on Xbox / Steam storefronts. Spartans are loadouts, not a 30-hero roster.
Why it fits. Objective modes (Strongholds, CTF, Oddball) plus a sandbox. The “hero” is the weapon you picked up. I include it because several 2026 shooter lists still keep a free Xbox arena next to Overwatch, not because it is a clone.
Platforms. Xbox, Windows, Steam.
Price. Free multiplayer. Campaign sold separately.
Who it’s for. A group that wants a sandbox and an objective, not a support ult.
Pros
- Free arena on Xbox’s own ecosystem.
- Objectives exist without a hero pass.
- Big Team is a different scale.
Cons
- No Zarya. No Mercy. The kit is the gun on the floor.
- A Battle.net Overwatch habit does not transfer to a sandbox.
Strinova
What it is. iDreamSky. Free third-person tactical hero shooter. GameSpot: PC, 22 November 2024. Characters can flatten into a 2D “paper” form to slip through space, stick to walls, or dodge.
Why it fits. Named characters with abilities plus a tactical round. GameSpot compares the maps to Valorant and the look to an anime action game.
Platforms. PC (Steam).
Price. Free.
Who it’s for. Players who want agent rounds and a movement gimmick, not a payload.
Pros
- Paper form is a named, official mechanic.
- Free PC client.
- Hero kits exist.
Cons
- Not a 5v5 respawn-on-the-cart game.
- Maps, on GameSpot’s account, are the weak half.
Heroes of the Storm
What it is. Blizzard’s free MOBA. Top-down. Several Overwatch heroes appear as playable characters. GameSpot: PC and Mac, 2 June 2015. Blizzard reduced live development in 2022; occasional balance still lands.
Why it fits. The weakest shooter claim and the strongest Blizzard-roster claim. You can play a Tracer from above with a talent tree. Overwatch perks are the later echo of that idea.
Platforms. Windows, macOS. Battle.net.
Price. Free.
Who it’s for. Players who want Overwatch names in a lane game.
Pros
- Actual Overwatch characters, official.
- Free.
- Talents are a build layer.
Cons
- Top-down MOBA, not a first-person cart.
- Live-ops are quiet.
Opening one tonight
- My queue: Overwatch, Zarya, range then ranked or quick play.
- Closest named product: Marvel Rivals.
- Older class shooter: Team Fortress 2.
- Cards on a champion: Paladins.
- One life and a buy: Valorant or FragPunk.
- A building: Siege X.
- The floor vanishes: THE FINALS.
- A kit in a ring: Apex.
- Lanes: Deadlock or Heroes of the Storm.
- The thing I am making: wishlist Tingbase.
Seasons change, so check each game’s current state before your group installs three of them.

Common questions
What game is most like Overwatch?
Marvel Rivals is the closest. It's a free 6v6 hero shooter with objectives and character abilities, though it uses a third-person camera and has team-up abilities Overwatch doesn't.
What games does Yuval play?
I play Overwatch as Zarya at Master rank. I'm also building Tingbase, a 3v3 hero shooter in Unity 6 with Tank, DPS and Healer roles.
Is Valorant like Overwatch?
Partly. Both have characters with unique abilities, but Valorant is a 5v5 tactical shooter with one life per round and a weapon economy. Aim matters a lot more in Valorant, while Overwatch is more about team fights and objectives.
Does Overwatch still have 6v6?
Yes. Blizzard kept Open Queue 6v6, with a maximum of two tanks, in both Quick Play and Competitive. Role Queue stays 5v5.
Is Paladins like Overwatch?
Yes. Paladins is a free 5v5 hero shooter with tank, damage and support roles. Its card loadout system lets you customize heroes in ways Overwatch doesn't.
Is Tingbase like Overwatch?
Somewhat. Tingbase is a 3v3 hero shooter with Tank, DPS and Healer roles, but it uses MMO-style hotbar combat instead of a payload format. It has arenas, deathmatch and co-op waves, and it's on Steam as app 4086630.
What free games are like Overwatch?
Overwatch itself, Marvel Rivals, Team Fortress 2, Paladins, Valorant, Apex Legends, THE FINALS, FragPunk, Halo Infinite, Splitgate: Arena Reloaded, Strinova and Heroes of the Storm are all free to play.
