Looking for your next MMO? A game like World of Warcraft is a persistent world where you pick a role, quest, and team up with other people for dungeons and raids. This list is all about the realm.
Most lists start with Final Fantasy XIV or Guild Wars 2, then add ESO, OSRS and SWTOR. I play WoW as Devastation Evoker Tingyoudied on EU-Ravencrest (2849 Blitz, RBG main)., plus my Evoker PvP guide.

The one I play
World of Warcraft
What it is. Blizzard’s subscription MMO. One character, a spec, a dungeon finder, raids, and — for me — rated battlegrounds / Blitz. I play Devastation Evoker: Scalecommander, Spatial Paradox, Font of Magic, full Mastery, trinket and interrupt on the scroll wheel. Party frames. PvP addons.
Why it fits. This is the reference, not an alternative. The closest products below copy a piece: the raid calendar, the no-sub map, the class story, or the loot loop.
Platforms. Windows, macOS. Battle.net.
Price. US shop: $14.99/month, $13.99/month (3 months), $12.99/month (6 or 12 months, $155.88 yearly). Midnight sold separately.
Who it’s for. Players who will pay a monthly fee for a character they already have, or who will start one.
Pros
- Rated BGs are the best 10-player PvP I’ve found in an MMO.
- Rated BGs are a real 10-man fight.
- Addons and Edit Mode let you build your own UI.
Cons
- Subscription plus expansions.
- A terrible first hour if you wanted a free trial the size of FFXIV’s.
Games like WoW
Final Fantasy XIV
What it is. Square Enix subscription MMO. One character learns every combat, crafting, and gathering job (change the weapon). Dungeons, trials, raids, Free Companies. Platforms on Square Enix’s product pages: PC, Mac, PlayStation, Xbox Series.
Why it fits. The loop is queue a dungeon, clear a raid, pay a month. The story is more of the product than a WoW leveling zone.
Platforms. Windows, macOS, PS4 / PS5, Xbox Series X|S on current Square Enix lists.
Price. Free trial on freetrial.finalfantasyxiv.com: level 80, no time limit, A Realm Reborn + Heavensward + Stormblood + Shadowbringers. Endwalker and Dawntrail need the full game. Then a subscription (Entry / Standard.finalfantasyxiv.com shop).
Who it’s for. Players who want a raid calendar and will read a main scenario.
Pros
- Trial is huge and official.
- One character, every job.
- Duty Support NPCs for story dungeons.
Cons
- Trial blocks Market Board / some social / PvP — read the comparison page.
- Subscription after the trial, same shape as WoW.
Guild Wars 2
What it is. ArenaNet. No monthly subscription — support article: “Guild Wars 2 will never require a monthly subscription.” Core game free with limits (2 character slots, chat/mail caps, no raids / guild bank on the free-account table). Buy any expansion to lift those limits. Dynamic events replace many quest hubs. Action combat, dodge rolls. Structured PvP and World vs World.
Why it fits. If the complaint is the calendar and the fee, this is the realm.
Platforms. PC (ArenaNet / Steam).
Price. Core free. Expansions (Heart of Thorns through Visions of Eternity on the account-types table) are one-time.
Who it’s for. Players who will not pay $15 a month and will accept events instead of hubs.
Pros
- No sub, official, “never.”
- Horizontal gear, event maps.
- WvW is a large fight WoW BGs are not.
Cons
- Free account is not the full game.
- PC only on the long-standing store.
The Elder Scrolls Online
What it is. ZeniMax / Bethesda. Tamriel, voiced quests, level scaling so a friend can walk with you. Class is a start; weapons and sets decide the build. Four-player dungeons, twelve-player trials, Cyrodiil, battlegrounds.
Why it fits. Premuš’s second place. Betts’s console pick. Perera’s “the one I stayed with” — that last sentence is his playtime, not mine.
Platforms. PC, Mac, PS4 / PS5, Xbox One / Series.
Price. Buy-to-play base + chapters. Optional ESO Plus for DLC and crafting bag. Game Pass has been a door on Xbox lists.
Who it’s for. Explorers and couch groups. Less “Mythic lockout,” more map.
Pros
- Scaling world.
- Controller is a first-class path.
- Optional sub, not a required one.
Cons
- Endgame complaints show up on the same lists that recommend it.
- Buy-in can stack if you want every chapter.
Other official realms
Star Wars: The Old Republic
What it is. BioWare / Broadsword. 20 December 2011. Class stories, companions, light / dark. Flashpoints and operations. PC.
Why it fits. The free story realm. Premuš and Betts keep it.
Platforms. Windows.
Price. Free-to-play with limits. Optional subscription for convenience. Confirm swtor.com.
Who it’s for. Players who want a voiced class story more than a Mythic calendar.
Pros
- Stories are the product.
- Free door.
- Tank / healer / damage advanced classes.
Cons
- Systems show their age — Premuš’s own debit.
- PC-only on the long-standing client.
The Lord of the Rings Online
What it is. Daybreak / Standing Stone. 24 April 2007. Middle-earth, slower quests, skirmishes. Still patched in 2026 notes on those lists.
Why it fits. The Tolkien quest realm. Betts’s tenth. Atmosphere, not the current raid meta.
Platforms. PC.
Price. Free-to-play + optional VIP + quest packs. Confirm lotro.com. Microtransactions are the debit Perera names.
Who it’s for. Readers who want the map more than the parse.
Pros
- The setting is the draw.
- Free door.
- Long, slow world.
Cons
- Age shows.
- Cash shop is part of the live model.
Old School RuneScape
What it is. Jagex. 22 February 2013 (the 2007-era server). Skills to 99, a max account measured in thousands of hours. PC + official mobile.
Why it fits. Betts’s fifth. Timesaver’s long-haul pick. The grind is the game.
Platforms. Windows, Mac, Linux, mobile (official app).
Price. Free-to-play worlds with limits. Membership is the paid full game. Confirm jagex.com / osrs.
Who it’s for. Players who want goals measured in months.
Pros
- Official mobile + PC.
- Skill system is the content.
- Membership is a known door.
Cons
- Pace is the opposite of a Blitz queue.
- Membership is still a monthly if you want the full map.
Albion Online
What it is. Sandbox. The gear you wear is the ability bar. Full-loot zones, gathering, player economy. PC, mobile, Xbox on later store pages.
Why it fits. Betts’s eighth. Timesaver’s full-loot sandbox.
Platforms. PC, mobile, Xbox (shared server on later notes). Confirm albiononline.com.
Price. Free-to-play + optional premium. Confirm.
Who it’s for. Players who are tired of the quest log.
Pros
- Classless.
- Stakes in the open world.
- Cross-platform on their current pitch.
Cons
- Losing gear is the product.
- Not a dungeon finder like WoW.
Black Desert Online
What it is. Pearl Abyss. Action combat, lifeskills, a cash shop the lists themselves call aggressive. Seasonal servers for a fresh level.
Why it fits. Perera’s other “I stayed” game. Timesaver’s combat / visuals pick.
Platforms. PC, consoles on Pearl Abyss storefronts. Confirm.
Price. Buy-to-play or free-to-play depending on region / generation (BDO has flipped doors). Pearl Shop is always there.
Who it’s for. Players who want the swing of the combat more than a tidy raid lockout.
Pros
- Combat feel is why the lists keep it.
- Lifeskills are a second game.
- Seasons exist.
Cons
- Pay-to-convenience is a public complaint.
- Not tab-target.
Throne and Liberty
What it is. NCSoft / Amazon Games. Free. Large-scale PvP and PvE, a campaign, dungeons. PC and consoles on the 2024–2026 storefronts.
Why it fits. Timesaver’s free entry on PC and console. Perera’s guild-war MMO.
Platforms. PC, PlayStation, Xbox.
Price. Free-to-play. Battle pass / shop exist. Confirm.
Who it’s for. A guild that wants large fights without a WoW sub.
Pros
- Free door, consoles included.
- Large-scale is the pitch.
- Dungeons exist beside the field.
Cons
- Launch stiffness is Perera’s own history note.
- Live-ops move.
Lost Ark
What it is. Smilegate / Amazon. Free. Top-down raids, horizontal systems, time gates the lists warn about.
Why it fits. Timesaver’s raid-mechanics pick. Perera listed it with the caveat he had not played it — I will do the same.
Platforms. Windows (Steam / Amazon). Region locks have existed; confirm.
Price. Free. Shop + pass. Confirm.
Who it’s for. Players who want raid choreography more than a continent to walk.
Pros
- Raids are the product.
- Free.
- Spectacle.
Cons
- Time gates / homework show up on every honest list.
- Not tab-target.
Neverwinter
What it is. Cryptic / Gearbox. Free. Forgotten Realms, action combat, campaigns, dungeons.
Why it fits. Fone.tips and Perera keep a D&D action-MMO on the shelf.
Platforms. PC, consoles.
Price. Free + shop. Confirm.
Who it’s for. Players who want a campaign and a queue, not a $15 sub.
Pros
- Free.
- Dungeons are the loop.
- Setting is readable.
Cons
- Cash shop is the live model.
- Smaller than the first three names.
Loot loops that are not MMOs
Diablo IV
What it is. Blizzard. 5 June 2023. Shared Sanctuary, seasons, a campaign. Blizzard has called it not an MMORPG; Betts still ranks it because you meet other players on the map.
Why it fits. The shorter session when a realm is too much. Same company as WoW; different product.
Platforms. PC, PS4 / PS5, Xbox One / Series.
Price. Paid base + expansions / seasons. Confirm Battle.net.
Who it’s for. A couple who want a night, not a lockout.
Pros
- Shared map, no guild calendar.
- Seasons reset the toy.
- Same Battle.net account many WoW players already have.
Cons
- Not an MMO.
- Live-service shop.
Path of Exile
What it is. GGG. 23 October 2013. Free. Skill tree, leagues, a solo option. 0 date.
Why it fits. Betts’s ninth. The free build toy.
Platforms. PC. Console editions exist. Confirm.
Price. Free (PoE1). Cosmetic / stash tabs are the shop. Confirm.
Who it’s for. Players who liked talent trees more than a capital city.
Pros
- Free.
- Build depth is the content.
- Leagues reset.
Cons
- The tree will hurt — Betts is right to warn.
- Not a dungeon finder with two roles and a kick.
EVE Online
What it is. CCP. Player economy, ships, nullsec. Free Alpha clone + paid Omega. Timesaver’s 2026 note: more beginner-safe than the old reputation.
Why it fits. The sandbox when you are done with quests. Not a fantasy raid.
Platforms. Windows. Official launcher.
Price. Free Alpha. Omega is the subscription. Confirm eveonline.com.
Who it’s for. Players who want other players to be the content.
Pros
- The economy is the game.
- Free Alpha door.
- Unique.
Cons
- Spreadsheets are a meme because they are true.
- Not Azeroth.
Opening one tonight
- My realm: WoW, Evoker, Blitz.
- Closest subscription raid: Final Fantasy XIV. Start on the official trial.
- No monthly fee: Guild Wars 2.
- Couch / scale: The Elder Scrolls Online.
- Voiced class story: Star Wars: The Old Republic.
- Tolkien: LOTRO.
- Years of skills: Old School RuneScape.
- Gear is the class: Albion.
- A loot night, not a realm: Diablo IV or Path of Exile.
- Other players are the content: EVE.
Trials, plus packs, and regional prices move. A 2849 Blitz and a scroll-wheel kick are not an FFXIV savage. Confirm the shop before the guild installs three clients.

Common questions
What game is most like World of Warcraft?
Final Fantasy XIV. It has the same mix of dungeons, raids and a monthly subscription, and its free trial lets you play up to level 80. If you don't want a subscription, Guild Wars 2 is the closest alternative.
What does Yuval play in World of Warcraft?
I play a Devastation Evoker on EU-Ravencrest, with a 2849 rating in Blitz battlegrounds, and I main rated battlegrounds.
Is the Final Fantasy XIV free trial the whole game?
Almost. You can play up to level 80 with no time limit, covering A Realm Reborn through Shadowbringers. Endwalker and Dawntrail need the full game, and some features like the Market Board and PvP are restricted.
What MMO is like WoW without a monthly fee?
Guild Wars 2 is the best choice, since it never requires a subscription and the core game is free. The Elder Scrolls Online (buy once, optional ESO Plus) and Star Wars: The Old Republic (free with an optional sub) are good options too.
Is there a single-player game like World of Warcraft?
Yes. Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning and Dragon's Dogma 2 give you big worlds, quests and party combat without needing a guild.
How much does World of Warcraft cost?
WoW costs $14.99 a month in the US, with discounts on longer plans down to $12.99 a month on a 6- or 12-month plan. The Midnight expansion is sold separately.
