WoW addon manager (2026): one app, one install, CurseForge or Wago or WowUp
How a World of Warcraft addon manager writes folders into Retail or Classic — CurseForge standalone vs Overwolf, Wago App, WowUp / WowUpCf.

Tired of updating addons by hand after every patch? An addon manager does it for you. It writes addon folders into one install and checks them for a newer file. The game still turns each addon on from the character-select AddOns button. You can unzip a folder yourself. The app is that copy, plus updates, and it has to use the install you launch.
I play Retail Midnight as Devastation Evoker Tingyoudied on EU-Ravencrest. My addon picks are in best WoW addons and PvP addons.
Get the manager from that project’s own site. A “free addon pack.exe” is how accounts get put at risk.
The three apps I would open
| App | Where to get it | Sources it is sold on | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| CurseForge app | curseforge.com/download/app | CurseForge library; standalone or Overwolf | Biggest catalog; Overwolf build adds that client |
| Wago App | addons.wago.io (project site) | Wago + CurseForge (their copy) | WeakAuras / Plater-friendly; newer catalog than Curse |
| WowUp / WowUpCf | wowup.io and Overwolf WowUpCf | Wago / GitHub / TukUI vs CurseForge (split apps) | Open source; CurseForge access is the Cf build with ads |
I haven’t run a long head-to-head test, so I won’t pick a winner. The one rule that matters: one app, one Retail folder.
CurseForge
The official download page calls it the way to install and update mods in one click, and it offers standalone or Overwolf (in-game features). Overwolf’s listing includes World of Warcraft, auto-detect, auto-update, and ads / a subscription. Creators are paid from that ecosystem — Overwolf has published a 70% share to authors.
If you hate a second overlay, take standalone. If you already live in Overwolf, the other button is fine. Both still have to point at _retail_ or Classic, not both in one path.
Wago App
Wago is where a lot of WeakAuras and Plater strings live. The desktop app is the same company’s installer: Wago + CurseForge in one UI, according to current 2026 write-ups, without Overwolf. Confirm addons.wago.io (or the current Wago app URL) before you trust a mirror.
If WeakAuras is your main extra, this is the app I would try first. If you only want Details from CurseForge, CurseForge’s own app is enough.
WowUp
WowUp on GitHub is the community updater: Windows, Mac, Linux, auto-detect installs, GitHub zips, TukUI, companion addon. After the CurseForge API fight they shipped a separate Overwolf-sanctioned client (WowUpCf) so CurseForge downloads can run with ads on. The original app kept Wago. Wowhead covered that split in 2022; the two-app story is still how people talk about it in 2026.
winget install wowup.wowup vs winget install wowup.cf is the GitHub readme’s current split. Do not run both against the same AddOns folder.
Retail vs Classic vs PTR
Each client has its own Interface\AddOns directory. Midnight Retail is not Classic, and PTR is a third. A manager that “supports all versions” still needs the correct dropdown before a bulk install.
I only queue Retail Blitz. If you play both, treat them as two games: two folders, same app, two profiles.
One app, one folder
Two managers on one path is how you get:
- Two copies of Details
- A WeakAuras that one app updates and the other rolls back
- A “missing dependency” after a patch because each app owns half the files
Pick one. Uninstall the other. Back up Interface and WTF before a major patch. The game’s AddOns button still has to enable the folders after a copy.
Manual zip, when you need it
WowUp can install from a GitHub release zip or a direct zip URL. CurseForge can import a project URL. A zip with no project metadata often cannot auto-update — WowUp marks those ignored.
I would rather take Details from the project page than from a Discord dump. The Evoker UI is “clear bars + enemy cooldowns,” not a mystery folder.
WeakAuras strings are a second install
The WeakAuras addon is a folder. The string you paste is a Wago (or friend) import. A manager that only writes the folder will not update those strings. That is why Wago App and WeakAuras Companion exist.
I use WeakAuras as one reminder. If you import a full arena pack, you also inherit its patch lag. After a Midnight point release, update the addon first, then open Wago / Companion, then test in a city. A string that still calls a renamed talent is a Lua error waiting for Blitz.
Plater profiles are the same shape: addon folder + imported profile. One manager should own the folder. One source should own the profile.
Backup, then patch
Copy Interface and WTF to a dated folder before the weekly reset (Tuesday US, Wednesday EU). If the manager’s “rollback” exists, still keep your own zip. A bad bulk update is how you lose a working Plater profile and a week of bar layout.
I play left-handed UHJK with a Naga grid. That layout lives in WTF. A manager does not back it up unless you tell it to. Assume it does not.
After the manager writes
- Character select → AddOns → enable.
- Watch for outdated / blocked.
- City, dummy, skirmish, then Blitz.
- If Lua errors, disable the last new folder.
How addons change a UI is the folder anatomy.
Linux: WowUp’s GitHub lists Linux. CurseForge / Wago App write-ups in 2026 still treat those as Windows/macOS. Confirm the site you download from.

Common questions
Does WoW have a built-in addon manager?
Not really. The AddOns button on the character screen only turns installed addons on and off. To install and update them easily, you need a separate app like CurseForge, Wago or WowUp.
Can one addon manager handle Retail and Classic WoW?
Yes, as long as you point it at each version's own folder. Retail and Classic don't share addons, so each needs its own setup.
Should I use two WoW addon managers at once?
No. Two apps updating the same folder can create duplicate or half-updated addons. Pick one of CurseForge, Wago App or WowUp and stick with it.
What is the difference between CurseForge standalone and Overwolf?
CurseForge offers a lightweight standalone app and an Overwolf version with in-game features. Both manage WoW addons just fine. The standalone app is simpler if you don't want Overwolf installed.
Does WowUp still work with CurseForge?
Yes, through the WowUpCf version, which is Overwolf-approved and shows ads to support CurseForge access. The regular WowUp and WowUp+Wago versions use other addon sources.
Where do I download WeakAuras?
Get the WeakAuras addon from CurseForge or Wago, and find aura strings on wago.io. The Wago App or WeakAuras Companion can keep those strings updated for you.
