Evoker PvP guide
How to play Evoker in PvP by choosing a spec job first, then spending the short range on purpose.

Evoker has three specs and one shared problem. The range is shorter than people expect, so the position is the spec.
Talent numbers move every patch. This draft is the decision order, not a copy of today’s tuning. Update the buttons when the patch changes them.
Pick the job
Devastation is the damage spec. Your team brought you to turn a go into a kill. Preservation is the healer. Your team brought you to keep a go from ending them. Augmentation is the support spec. Your damage mostly matters because your allies hit harder while you are doing your job.
Write that job in one sentence before you queue. If you are Preservation and you spend the opener on damage, you have changed jobs without telling your team.
Respect the range
Evoker abilities often ask you to be closer than a mage or a warlock. That is not a mistake to play around by standing in Africa. It is the spec. Stand where your next cast can reach the person you named, and where you can leave.
Before a go, name the target and the exit. “I hit their healer, then I have a way back to my partner.” If you cannot name the exit, you are diving, not playing a short-range caster.
Spend the first cooldown on the job
On Devastation, the first important cooldown should threaten the kill target. On Preservation, it should answer their go, not start yours. On Augmentation, it should land on the ally who is about to do the damage.
If the first cooldown hits a random nearest player, the spec did not fail. The plan did.
Review one exchange
After the match, watch one go. Did you reach the person you named, and did you still have a way out? That is the Evoker review. Damage meters and healing parses come after that question has an answer.
Common questions
Which Evoker spec should I play?
Devastation if you are there to do damage. Preservation if you are there to keep people alive. Augmentation if your team wins by boosting allies. Learn one of those jobs before you swap.
Why does Evoker feel short range?
The kit is built around being closer than a typical ranged caster. Standing at maximum range and hoping is how the spec feels weak.
