How to make a WeakAura readable

Make WeakAuras you can read mid-fight: fewer icons, bigger text, and one alert per job.

  3. Make the text survive the icon
  4. Show it only when it is true
  5. Do not make it choose the spell

A WeakAura is readable when you know what it means without stopping to study it. The usual failure is the opposite: a row of every spell, each with a number, sitting on top of the fight. You imported a screen, and then you stopped looking at it.

I play Devastation Evoker as Tingyoudied on EU-Ravencrest (2849 Blitz, RBG main), with trinket and interrupt on the scroll wheel and movement on UHJK. The spec guide is the Evoker PvP guide. The goal is one reminder for the thing you actually miss. My kick already lives on the wheel.

Best WoW addons keeps WeakAuras to one job: a reminder the default UI doesn’t make obvious. How addons change a WoW UI covers the wider rule: an addon draws something new, and in Midnight it isn’t supposed to decide the pull for you. For combat specifically, see PvP addons.

One reminder, then stop

Open the options with /wa. The left side is the list of auras. If that list is a pack someone else built for a whole specialization, you are not going to read it. Turn auras off until one remains: the cooldown you keep forgetting, or the buff you let fall. Add a second only after the first one has earned the glance.

Tick what is wrong. The line is the first thing to fix.

Start with one aura for one cooldown. A screen full of icons is harder to read than the default UI.

On Evoker I already know where the kick is. A WeakAura that restates the scroll-wheel interrupt is noise. A WeakAura that restates a personal cooldown Midnight already draws is the same noise. The aura has to answer a question the default screen still hides.

Put it where your eyes already are

A design note from 2017 still separates the two layouts that matter. A row of icons under your character makes you look at the row. A signal near the character lets you keep the fight in view. Neither works if the aura covers the ground under you. You will stand in the bad because the reminder was on top of it.

Keep it off nameplates too. The cast bar on an enemy is often what the aura was meant to help you notice. Midnight can mark an important cast with a glow and a cast aimed at you with a red border. Those are switches in the nameplate options. Do not cover them with a timer.

Drag the aura while its options are open. If it will not move, select it again in the list and drag the frame. The eye control shows or hides an aura while you line things up. Close the options and look at a trivial fight before you trust the spot.

I keep auras away from the middle of the screen. Party frames already have that rule. An aura that sits on the thumb grid or on the plate you kick from has failed the same test.

Make the text survive the icon

Spell art is bright. White numbers on it disappear. In the aura’s display settings, raise the text size until you can read it without leaning in. Turn on an outline, or a shadow. The addon’s own text display is built with both available: an outline, and a small dark shadow offset from the letters. Use one. Thick outlines can look rough, so if the letters look chewed up, try the shadow instead of a heavier outline.

A WeakAuras guide updated in July 2024 points at the other clutter control. Extra decimal places on a timer are noise on a small bar. Whole seconds are enough, and if the bar already shows the time, remove the number.

Show it only when it is true

An icon that sits there for the whole dungeon becomes furniture. Set the aura to appear when the condition is true: the cooldown is ready, the buff is missing, the stack is low. When the condition is false, it should be gone. The appearance is the signal. A number you have to interpret is a second step, and the second step is where readability dies.

The Load settings are the other half. Limit the aura to the specialization it belongs to, so it is not sitting there on a character that cannot use it.

Do not make it choose the spell

Older aura packs were built to say “this is up, so press this.” That is a rotation caller. Blizzard’s Midnight changes draw the line at that job: an addon can present combat information in a different shape, and it is not supposed to make the combat decision. A readable aura in the current game is the cooldown you forget, shown big and shown only when it matters. It is not a list of your buttons in the order someone else would press them.

If you cannot explain the aura in one sentence, it is not readable yet. “This bar is my main cooldown, and it shows when it is ready” is a sentence. “This pack tracks the spec” is not.

The kick is on the wheel. The plate is the cast. The aura is optional paint. How to review an arena loss is what you watch after, not a second overlay during.

Common questions

How do I open WeakAuras in WoW?

Type /wa in chat and press Enter. Select an aura on the left to change its size, text and outline, and drag it on screen to move it.

How many WeakAuras should I use?

Start with one for the cooldown or buff you miss most. Add another only once the first one is easy to read; a huge imported pack is often harder to read than the default UI.

How do I make WeakAura text easier to read?

Make the font bigger and add an outline or shadow so it stays visible over bright effects. Remove extra decimals and duplicate timers you don't need.

Where should I put WeakAuras on my screen?

Place them close to where you already look, but not on top of your character. Keep nameplates, cast bars and the ground under your feet visible.

Can WeakAuras tell me which spell to press in Midnight?

No. In Midnight, addons can change how information looks but aren't supposed to make combat decisions for you. Use WeakAuras as reminders, not rotation helpers.
