What is a nameplate

A nameplate is the frame over a unit in World of Warcraft. I read nameplates in Blitz as Devastation Evoker, with Plater on top.

A nameplate is the frame floating over a player or an NPC. The Warcraft Wiki calls it a frame anchored to that unit, showing health, a cast, and a few auras. You can watch a pack without clicking each one, which the target frame cannot do. Clicking a plate targets that unit.

I play Devastation Evoker Tingyoudied on EU-Ravencrest (2849 Blitz, RBG main). Trinket and interrupt sit on the scroll wheel. Nameplates are how I spot the cast I need to kick. More in my Evoker PvP guide. The plates themselves are Blizzard’s UI. An addon only changes how they are drawn — how addons change a WoW UI.

Enemy plates and friendly plates

Hostile plates sit on enemies. They carry a health bar, a cast bar that shows whether the cast can be interrupted, debuffs you applied, and, if you are a tank, coloring tied to threat.

Friendly plates sit on allies and friendly NPCs. Health can be optional, and players can show class color. In a raid, leave them off. Raid frames already show the group. In Blitz I care about enemy plates and raid-style party frames, not a forest of friendly names.

The bar under your own feet is not one of these. The Personal Resource Display is a nameplate-style strip on your HUD: your health, your main resource, combo points or their equivalent, absorbs, and incoming healing. It is a separate switch under Options, then Combat.

What you are reading on the cast bar

The cast bar is why nameplates matter in a pull — and in a node pile. It is the spell that unit is casting, drawn on the unit, so you do not have to target it first. That is the kick.

Midnight overhauled these plates in patch 12.0.1 (10 February 2026). The cast-bar options include spell name, spell icon, spell target, a highlight for important casts, and a highlight when the cast is aimed at you. Important casts get a bright glow. A cast aimed at you gets a red border. Both are off until you turn them on.

The same guide lists six styles: Modern, Thin Bars, Blocky Bars, Clean Health, Blocky Cast, and Legacy Red. A style changes the shape of the bars. It does not change the spell.

Open them from Escape, then Options, then Nameplates under Gameplay. Simplify Nameplates quiets plates you do not want to read, such as minions. Stacking keeps a pack from drawing every plate in one spot. Overlapping leaves them where the units stand.

When an addon is still a choice

The default options still do not do everything. You still cannot pick a font, recolor the bars, or move buffs and debuffs off the plate without an addon. That is the remaining job of something like Plater. You do not need it to see the cast.

The wiki lists Ctrl+V as the default keybind for Always Show Nameplates. If that key does nothing, the bind has been changed. Look under Key Bindings rather than reinstalling the game.

Try Midnight’s built-in options first. You may not need an addon at all.

Common questions

What is a nameplate in World of Warcraft?

A floating frame anchored to a player or NPC. On an enemy it usually shows a health bar and a cast bar, so you can watch more than one unit without using only the target frame.

How do I turn nameplates on?

Press Escape, open Options, and choose Nameplates under Gameplay. Enemy plates are the ones that matter in combat. The Warcraft Wiki lists Ctrl+V as the default bind for always showing them. Check Key Bindings if that does nothing.

Is the bar under my character a nameplate?

No. That is the Personal Resource Display. It sits on your own HUD and shows your health and resources. Turn it on separately under Options, then Combat.

What does the cast bar on a nameplate mean?

It is the spell that unit is casting. Midnight can mark an important cast with a glow and a cast aimed at you with a red border. Both highlights are switches in the nameplate options. On Evoker that bar is why the kick sits on the scroll wheel.

Do I need a nameplate addon?

Not to see health and casts. The Midnight nameplates already show those. An addon is for a look the default options do not offer, such as bar color or font. Plater is the usual one.
