How to keybind an MMO
How to bind a World of Warcraft action slot to a key you can reach, and the same idea in any MMO that uses a hotbar.

Still clicking your spells? Keybinds will change how you play. …that casts a spell from your action bar. The slot holds a spell, an item, or a macro. Pressing the key is faster than moving the cursor onto the icon, and it leaves the mouse free to turn the camera and pick a target.
A mount, food, or a bag can stay a click. An interrupt cannot.
I play Devastation Evoker as Tingyoudied on EU-Ravencrest (2849 Blitz, RBG main). I am left-handed. The aiming hand is the left. Movement is UHJK. Buffs and consumables sit on a Naga Left-Handed 12-button thumb grid. Trinket and interrupt sit on the scroll wheel. The right-handed default is still the one most people need. The left-handed remap is how a left hand changes MMO keybinds.
The bind is a menu in the game. A bar addon can draw those slots later; Best WoW addons is that list.
Where the menu is
Press Escape to open the game menu, then Options. Keybindings sits under Gameplay. Since Dragonflight, keybindings live inside Options rather than behind their own button.
Click the slot beside the action you want. Each action has two slots, so one action can carry two different keys. Press the key, or hold a modifier and press the key. If you wipe a bind you needed, including Escape, the same window has a defaults control in the upper right.
A bind applies on the realm where you set it. The screen can limit a change to one character, or extend it to every character on that realm.
Other MMOs put the same screen under another name. In Final Fantasy XIV, the SaltedXIV guide uses System, then Keybind, then Hotbar, after the skill is on a visible bar. The labels change. The job is still a slot, then a key.
| Job | Right-hand default the guides use | What I actually bind |
|---|---|---|
| Movement | W A S D, A/D strafe since 11.2.7 | U H J K |
| Spells you mash | Q E R F and 1–4 | Keys next to UHJK. |
| Interrupt and trinket | A close key, not Ctrl+7 | Scroll wheel |
| Buffs and consumables | A farther key or a bag click | Naga Left-Handed 12-grid |
| A heal on a friend | Target, then the key — or Mouseover Cast | Same idea, on the keys I can reach |
Movement, then spells
Patch 11.2.7, The Warning, in December 2025, changed the fresh default for A and D from turning to strafing. On login, an existing character can be asked to take the strafe keys or keep turning. If yours still turns, that prompt was answered the old way. In the old layout, strafe sits on Q and E, and holding the right mouse button makes A and D strafe for as long as the button is held.
Keyboard turning is the slow camera. The mouse turns the character faster, which is why the 2020 Wowhead guide told people to put strafe on A and D, years before the patch made that the fresh default. If you already chose strafe, Q and E are free for spells.
S still walks backward, and backpedaling is slower than turning around. Some PvP players take S off movement and spend it on a spell. In a dungeon, a short step backward is sometimes the smaller correction. Keep S until a fight shows you it is in the way. On UHJK, J is back.
This cluster assumes the mouse is in the right hand. If you mouse left-handed, the comfortable keys are on the other side. That layout is in left-handed MMO settings.
Close keys for the spells you mash
There’s no single right layout; pick keys your hand reaches without moving. A spell you press several times a minute belongs on a key the movement hand can hit without leaving its rest. For a hand on W A S D, Wowhead names Q, E, R, F, and 1 through 4, and it puts the interrupt in that group. T, G, Z, X, C, V, and the higher numbers are a longer reach, so they suit a trinket or a long cooldown. Game Informer’s 2010 column uses Ctrl+7 as the picture of a key you will miss when the kick matters.
Wowhead keeps W A S D and fills in around it. Game Informer moves movement to E S D F. Taugrim’s MMO guide, updated in May 2025, uses E D W R so the hand stays near the typing home row. A row from a video fails if it hurts or if you cannot find it. UHJK is my row.
Pick how often you press the spell. The line is where it should live for a hand resting on the movement keys.
Put it on a key the movement hand can hit without shifting its rest. For a hand on W A S D, the guides use Q, E, R, F, and 1 through 4.
Change a few binds and practice where a missed key is cheap. Add the next ones once those are automatic. Wowhead says a full overhaul can take weeks. Taugrim says about a week on a low-stakes character, kept out of a raid until the keys are boring.
Give the same meaning to the same key on every character. The interrupt lives on one key, a defensive on another, wherever you log in. Changing character then skips the search. I keep interrupt on the scroll wheel for that reason.
Modifiers cost a finger
Shift, Ctrl, and Alt are the modifiers these games accept. Hold one, then press the letter. F and Shift+F are two different slots. The SaltedXIV guide points out that two keys are harder than one, so the spell you cannot miss stays on the plain key. The modifier version is the spell that can wait a beat.
One use of the second slot is a focus cast. If F is your interrupt, Shift+F can be the same interrupt aimed at your focus, the second unit in what a focus macro is. The spell still has to be in range. Set the plain interrupt first. My interrupt is on the wheel. A modifier-plus-wheel, if the game sees it, is the same idea.
Alt+F4 closes the Windows window. If Alt is one of your modifiers, leave F4 off the combat bar.
Mouseover Cast and Click Casting
Many MMO bind guides spend a chapter on healing without targeting. Blizzard shipped both in the default UI. You do not need an addon to turn them on.
Mouseover Cast lives under Options, Combat. Here’s how it works, per Blizzard’s accessibility post: mouse over a unit frame, press the keybind you already have, and the spell hits that unit without targeting them. It works with keyboard keys and modifiers. It does not invent a new key. It changes the target of the key you already bound. A heal on a frame, an interrupt on a nameplate if the option accepts it — check in-game. I use it as a targeting rule, not as a reason to put a kick on a click.
Click Casting lives under Options, Key Bindings, Click Casting. Bind a spell or a macro to a mouse button on a unit frame. Shift, Ctrl, and Alt are allowed. Click Casting supports left, right, middle, Button4 and Button5. That is why a 12-button Naga grid often cannot be bound here if the mouse software is sending 1 through =. Those are keyboard keys. They already work with Mouseover Cast. They do not become Click Casting buttons unless the software sends a real mouse button.
Midnight’s nameplate changes are a topic of their own. If a later patch expands Click Casting, follow what the in-game options show.
A mouseover macro is the older version of the Combat checkbox. Forum templates look like /cast [@mouseover,help,nodead][@player] Spell. If Mouseover Cast is on, many of those macros are redundant. If you need a fallback to self, a short macro still earns a slot.
Click-casting a heal onto a frame is not a reason to leave an interrupt as a click. The kick still belongs on a key, or on the wheel.
A mouse button has to be its own key
A side button is an extra bind when the game receives it as its own input. A mouse with a grid of side buttons often ships already sending 1 through the equals key, which Wowhead notes. If your keyboard hand already presses 1, that mouse button is the same bind. Remap it in the mouse software to a key the other hand does not press, such as a numpad key with Num Lock on, then bind that key in the game.
The Naga Left-Handed grid is that 12-key problem on the other thumb. I put buffs and consumables there, not the kick. The wheel is already the kick and the trinket. If a grid key still sends 1, and 1 is also on the keyboard, both fire the same slot. Fix it in the mouse software, not by pressing harder.
The comments on that Wowhead guide describe a related clash. A mouse button set to Ctrl plus a number can combine with a number your keyboard hand is already holding, and the wrong slot fires. Give the mouse a key that hand is not using.
The key fires the slot
Drag the spell or the macro onto the square you bound. An April 2026 writeup describes that square showing a short code afterward, such as S-1 for Shift and 1. An empty square is a key that does nothing, however comfortable it is.
Bags, the character sheet, and anything you only touch in town can sit on the right side of the keyboard, or stay a click. A close key spent on them is how the interrupt ends up on Ctrl+7.
Practice on a dummy or a low-stakes queue until the close keys are boring. Then add the next ring. A full remap in a rated night is how you press the old mount key and die. UHJK was a week of looking. The wheel stayed the kick so that week had one thing that did not move.
Camera, voice, and the keys that are not spells
MMO guides also bind things that aren’t on the bar. Here are the jobs worth a key.
- Camera. Mouse look is the turn. A key that flips the camera or recenters it belongs somewhere you will not hit in a kick.
- Push-to-talk. Voice is a bind. Open mic on UHJK is keys in the channel. Put talk on a key that is not a cooldown.
- Target markers and focus. Focus is a second unit. A mark is a sign the team can see. Both need a key if you use them. Focus macros is that page.
- Soft targeting / target of target. Some MMOs, FFXIV especially, let you cycle or soft-target. WoW’s Mouseover Cast is the default-UI version of “hit the thing under the cursor.” Turn the option on before you write a macro for it.
FFXIV’s SaltedXIV path is still System, Keybind, Hotbar, after the skill is on a visible bar. The same closeness rule applies. I play WoW, so the binds below are the WoW ones.
Bars, stances, and the empty square
WoW can show more than one action bar. Stance, stealth, and some specs swap which bar is visible. Bind the slot, then put the spell on the bar that is showing when you need it. An empty square on the combat bar is a key that does nothing. A full town bar of mounts is fine. A combat bar of mounts is how the kick moved to Ctrl+7.
Do not hide the kick on a bar you cannot see. The wheel does not care which bar is up. That is one reason it stays the interrupt.
Nameplates in Midnight are a later UI change (patch 12.0.1 is the ). Click Casting and Mouseover Cast still need a frame or a legal target. If a patch moves the menu, start from Escape > Options.
The setup I actually use
My setup is UHJK, the Naga grid for buffs and consumables, and the scroll wheel for trinket and interrupt. The rest is a week of looking on a character whose rating you can afford to lose.

Common questions
How do I change keybinds in World of Warcraft?
Press Escape, choose Options, and open Keybindings under Gameplay. Click a slot and press the key you want. There's a button to restore the defaults if you need to start over.
Do A and D strafe or turn in WoW?
Strafe, on new characters since patch 11.2.7 in December 2025. Older characters may still have A and D set to turn. Check the Movement section in Keybindings to change it.
What is a modifier key in gaming?
It's Shift, Ctrl or Alt held together with another key, so one key can do two or three different things. For example, F and Shift+F can be two different spells. Keep your most important spells on plain keys.
Do I need an addon to keybind in WoW?
No. All keybinding is built into the game menu. Bar addons only change how your action bars look, and Mouseover Cast and Click Casting are also in the default UI.
Which abilities should I keybind in an MMO?
Anything you use in combat, especially your interrupt and defensive cooldowns. It's fine to click mounts, food, bags and other out-of-combat stuff.
What is Mouseover Cast in WoW?
It's a combat option that casts a spell on whatever unit your cursor is over, without changing your target. It's great for healing or interrupting off-target enemies. You still need the spell bound to a key.
What is Click Casting in WoW?
It lets you bind spells to mouse clicks on unit frames, with optional Shift, Ctrl or Alt. You find it under Key Bindings, Click Casting. It supports left, right, middle, Button4 and Button5.
