“Best” here means mods people keep because the game feels worse without them. Confirm each one against the version you play. This list is a draft to edit, not a claim that every mod was tested on one PC.

Pick the loader first

Fabric and NeoForge are different loaders. Choose one, make one instance, and only add mods for that loader. Mixing them is the usual reason a pack fails on the first launch.

Fabric is the easier home for the performance mods below. NeoForge is where a lot of larger content mods still live. If you want those content mods, start there instead of forcing them onto Fabric.

Performance

Start with the mods that make the game smoother before you add toys.

  • Sodium improves rendering on Fabric.
  • Lithium improves general server and game logic on Fabric.
  • Iris adds shader support on top of Sodium, if you want shaders.

Add these before you add a hundred content mods. A beautiful pack that stutters does not get played. The settings order around them is in how to increase FPS.

Information while you play

  • JEI or EMI shows recipes. Use the one that matches your loader.
  • A WAILA-style mod, such as Jade, shows what block or mob you are looking at.

These do not change the game’s rules much. They remove the tab-alt-tab to a wiki.

One content mod worth learning

Create is the content mod to learn if you want automation and contraptions rather than a pile of new ores. It is large. Give it its own instance so a broken update does not take your survival world with it.

If you already have a favorite content mod, keep it and cut three others. A short pack you understand beats a long pack you launch once.

Keep the pack small

Write down the mods in the instance. When the game updates, update the loader, then the performance mods, then the rest. If the instance will not boot, remove the last mod you added. That is the whole troubleshooting method.

Common questions

Do these work on every Minecraft version?

No. A mod works on the loader and version it was built for. Check that before you add it.

Can I mix Fabric and NeoForge mods?

No. Pick one loader for the instance. Mods from the other loader will not load there.
