What is a Minecraft shader

What Minecraft shaders do, how they differ from resource packs, and how to install one with Iris.

A Minecraft shader changes the light. The pictures on the blocks stay put. Shadows, water, and reflections are what move. A resource pack is the other download: art, sometimes sounds and the font. It does not need a mod. The two files can be on together. They use different menus.

I play Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge. The renderer is Sodium. The shader loader is Iris. I use Sodium and Iris on NeoForge 1.21.1 in my Create Aeronautics pack.

The zip is not a mod

A shader is a program that changes how the game draws light, shadows and water. OptiFine does not include a shader pack. The pack is a separate .zip. If what you saved is not a zip, it is not a shader pack. Leave it zipped, put it in the shaderpacks folder, and turn it on from the shader menu. That menu is not the resource-pack list, and the zip does not belong in the mods folder.

On Java, a mod has to load that zip. Iris is the one that does it on top of Sodium. Iris’s own site says it supports Fabric from 1.16.5 and NeoForge from 1.21.1, and that Forge is not supported. The download ships with Sodium. OptiFine in the same instance crashes. Iris names Canvas and Vulkan mods as the same crash. Putting Iris on is a normal mod install.

I do not run OptiFine. A 1.20.1 Forge shader workflow is a different instance. Mixing loaders is the usual first-launch crash.

What I actually run

The pack is NeoForge 1.21.1: Create 6.0.10, Aeronautics, Big Cannons, Iron’s Spellbooks, Apotheosis, YUNG’s, When Dungeons Arise, Sodium + Iris, JEI, Jade. Aeronautics lists Iris visual issues — that is their note, not a frame-rate test of mine. If the airship looks wrong, turn the shader off before you blame the host.

Sodium boosts FPS; Iris adds shaders on top. Performance mods is the longer cut. I play on a 1080p 240 Hz and a 1440p 155 Hz monitor with a desktop RTX 5080 + AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2. That is the client. A shader that looks fine on a screenshot can still hitch when Create is ticking.

Frames are the cost

How to increase FPS already says to take shaders off, Iris included, while you are raising the number, and to put them back when the number holds. A heavier preset spends more of them. Turning the pack off is the test that the world underneath did not change.

The list lives under Options, then Video Settings. Iris calls it Shader Packs. The first time you enable a pack, the game compiles it, and the picture can hitch until that pass finishes. Switching it off and back on starts that compile.

Most resource packs still sit beside a shader. Iris makes one exception. A resource pack that brings its own core shaders will not work while a shader pack is enabled. Ordinary textures do.

Bedrock is a different product

Bedrock does not run these Java shader mods. A file sold as a Bedrock shader is often a resource pack that paints the water and the light, and it belongs in the resource-pack menu. The zip in shaderpacks is the Java file. Realms is Mojang’s official host and it is not this NeoForge instance — server hosting.

Sodium boosts FPS; Iris adds shaders on top. I use Iris. Confirm the zip, the folder, and the loader before you chase a pretty thumbnail.

Common questions

Is a Minecraft shader the same as a resource pack?

No. A resource pack changes textures, sounds and fonts, while a shader changes lighting, shadows and water. You can use both at the same time.

Where do I put Minecraft shader packs?

Put the zip file in the shaderpacks folder without unzipping it. Don't put it in the mods or resourcepacks folder.

Do I need Iris or OptiFine for Minecraft shaders?

Yes, you need one of them. I use Iris with Sodium on NeoForge 1.21.1; Iris supports Fabric and NeoForge, but never install Iris and OptiFine together, or the game will crash.

Do shaders lower FPS in Minecraft?

Yes, often a lot. Turn shaders off if you're trying to improve FPS, and pick a lighter shader pack if your PC struggles.

Do Java shaders work on Minecraft Bedrock?

No. Java shader mods don't run on Bedrock, and most 'Bedrock shaders' are actually resource packs you install through the resource pack menu.
