Looking for a modpack? Pick one by playstyle and loader, not by its download count. In 2026 the 1.21.1 NeoForge line is where the big current packs sit. Three big ones to look at: All the Mods 10 (ATMTeam, ~500 mods, 1.21.1 NeoForge, file 8.3 dated 15 Oct 2026), FTB StoneBlock 4 (FTB, 1.21.1 NeoForge, 1.23.0 dated 12 Oct 2026, underground vaults and a World Engine), and Vault Hunters Third Edition (vaulthunters.gg, action-RPG vaults, official rec 8192 MB allocated). I do not play those three as a main. I play a custom NeoForge 1.21.1 pack: Create 6 + Aeronautics, Big Cannons, Iron’s Spellbooks, Apotheosis, YUNG’s, When Dungeons Arise, Sodium + Iris. That write-up is my Create Aeronautics modpack.
Keep in mind that a download count is just one site’s installs. It doesn’t tell you how well a pack runs or whether it’s any good.

What a modpack actually is
A pack is a pinned list: Minecraft version, loader, and a set of jars that load together. Installing a mod one at a time is a different page. A pack is how you share that list with friends without a 40-line Discord paste.
The page has to print:
- Game version (1.21.1 ≠ 1.21.4 ≠ 1.20.1)
- Loader (NeoForge, Fabric, Forge). Sodium’s own wiki supports Fabric and, from 1.21, NeoForge. Forge is not on that list.
- Client vs server files
- A changelog dated this month
If those four are missing, you are installing a screenshot.
Four playstyles, four packs
| If you want | Open this pack | Loader / version | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Everything in one profile | All the Mods 10 (ATM10) | 1.21.1 NeoForge, ATM 8.3 (15 Oct 2026) | Huge kitchen-sink pack |
| Underground campaign + quests | FTB StoneBlock 4 | 1.21.1 NeoForge, 1.23.0 (12 Oct 2026) | Quest-driven skyblock-style start |
| Action-RPG vaults | Vault Hunters (Third Edition) | Official site + CurseForge; 8 GB RAM rec | Needs 8 GB RAM |
| Create airships + RPG survival with friends | The pack I actually play | 1.21.1 NeoForge, Modrinth App | This is the one I can write from |
Kitchen sink: All the Mods 10
CurseForge listed ATM10 as “the top pack of 2026 with around 500 mods,” 1.21.1 NeoForge, last update 15 October 2026, on the order of 22 million downloads. That number is every install, forever. It is useful as “this pack is maintained.” It is useless as “you will like Mekanism.” All the Mods 10: get it free.
ATM10 is the pack you open when you want options. You will spend the first evening in JEI. I would not start it on a laptop with 8 GB of system RAM. Allocate RAM first. A mini PC can run it; a weak integrated GPU plus shaders will not.
Campaign: FTB StoneBlock 4
FTB’s own CurseForge page: The stone remembers. Dive into StoneBlock 4… explore handcrafted Vaults, learn from ancient Echoes, power the World Engine, all on 1.21.1. File 1.23.0, NeoForge, 12 October 2026, on the order of 2.9 million downloads. FTB StoneBlock 4: get it free.
This is a directed pack. You are underground. The World Engine is a progression machine. Vaults are a content loop. If you hate quest books, skip it. If you bounce off ATM10 because there is no “what now,” this is the other shape.
The facts above are the project page.
Action RPG: Vault Hunters
vaulthunters.gg calls it an action-RPG roguelike overhaul: procedurally generated vaults, loot, abilities, Third Edition Update 21. Official hardware note: Intel i5 6th gen or better, at least 8192 MB allocated, GTX 970 or better. The site still says open beta — expect bugs.
This is not Create. This is not stoneblock. If you want an ARPG loop inside Minecraft, this is the named product. I do not play it as a main
The pack I actually play
I almost never play vanilla. The server I run with friends is Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge, shared through the Modrinth App.
The centre is Create 6.0.10 and Create Aeronautics 1.3.2 (needs Sable). Airships, planes, balloons, cars. Create Big Cannons turns that airship into a warship. Then:
- Iron’s Spells ’n Spellbooks — schools of magic
- Apotheosis — enchanting, affixes, harder mobs
- YUNG’s — better caves, dungeons, mineshafts, strongholds, temples, fortresses, End island, witch huts
- When Dungeons Arise — huge structures you actually spot from an airship
- Sodium + Iris — frames and optional shaders (Aeronautics lists visual issues with Iris)
The instance is 171 files: 164 mods, 6 shader packs, Faithful 64x. The full pinned list, versions, and server notes are on the Create Aeronautics page. No need to repeat all 164 mods here. And if you can’t find a pack you love, building your own instance is always an option.
How to read a pack page
- Version + loader. 1.21.1 NeoForge is not 1.20.1 Forge.
- Release vs beta. Vault Hunters says beta. ATM 8.3 is a Release file.
- RAM. A 500-mod pack wants more than vanilla. 8 GB allocated is Vault Hunters’ own floor. My Create pack is heavy on world-gen and contraptions; see the RAM guide.
- Performance jars already inside. ATM10 has shipped Sodium on NeoForge. Do not drop a second Sodium jar on top. Performance mods.
- Client vs server. Minimaps and Iris stay on the client. The server gets the simulation mods.
- Where friends install it. CurseForge app, FTB app, Modrinth App. Two apps writing one instance is how you get two Create jars. Minecraft launcher.
Downloads are a bad sort
An older pack has had longer to collect installs. A Modrinth-only pack never appears on a CurseForge chart. A beta with a new number can look “newer” and still wipe a world. Keep a modded world from breaking.
I would rather see: last update this month, loader printed, a changelog, and a playstyle sentence. ATM10, StoneBlock 4, and Vault Hunters all clear that bar. So does a custom pack you pin yourself.
What I would not do
- Install “the #1 pack” and then add Create Aeronautics by hand on a different version
- Mix OptiFine into a Sodium / Iris pack. Iris’s own site says OptiFine crashes the game. OptiFine vs Sodium
- Start a 500-mod pack on a 60 Hz laptop and blame Minecraft
- Treat my 164-mod list as a universal best. It is the server I play.
If you want airships and RPG survival, start with the pack I play. If you want a maintained kitchen sink, open ATM10’s 1.21.1 NeoForge file. If you want a campaign, open StoneBlock 4. If you want vaults as a genre, open Vault Hunters and read the beta warning. Then stop adding jars until the first night loads.

Common questions
Is the most downloaded Minecraft modpack the best?
No. CurseForge download counts add up every install since a pack launched, so older packs always look bigger. All the Mods 10 has over 22 million downloads, which shows it's popular, not that it's the right pack for you.
What Minecraft version should I use for modpacks in 2026?
1.21.1 on NeoForge is the main version right now. Big packs like ATM10 and FTB StoneBlock 4 run on it. Packs on 1.20.1 use an older loader generation, so don't mix mods between the two.
What modpack does Yuval play?
A custom NeoForge 1.21.1 survival pack built around Create 6 and Create Aeronautics, with Big Cannons, Iron's Spellbooks, Apotheosis, YUNG's structures, When Dungeons Arise, and Sodium plus Iris. The full mod list is on the Create Aeronautics page.
Should I always install the newest version of a modpack?
Not always. A newer number can be a different pack or still in beta, like Vault Hunters' Third Edition. Read the pack page before replacing a world you care about, and back it up first.
Do CurseForge rankings include Modrinth modpacks?
No. CurseForge only counts packs hosted on CurseForge, so great packs that live only on Modrinth never show up in its top lists. Check both sites when you're browsing.
Should I play a kitchen sink or a quest modpack?
Pick a kitchen sink pack like ATM10 if you want lots of mods and freedom to do your own thing. Pick a quest, skyblock or stoneblock pack if you want a guided campaign with clear goals.
