Fabric vs Forge

Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge are different Minecraft loaders. The mod file names the one that has to be installed. My Create pack is NeoForge 1.21.1.

Downloaded a mod and it just won’t load? Fabric versus Forge is usually why, and the answer starts with the file, not a ranking. A mod loader is the program that starts a mod jar. Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge are three of those programs, and a jar stays unloaded on the one it was not built for. The good news: the download page already tells you which one a mod needs. This guide shows you how to read it.

I play Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge. My pack is built around Create and Aeronautics and shared through the Modrinth App (full list here). Create for 1.21.1 is a NeoForge mod, so I keep Fabric mods out of that instance.

Read the mods you will not drop

The mods you will not drop all name

Install Fabric for that Minecraft version, and put Fabric API in the same folder. Most Fabric mods ask for it.

Open the two or three mods you will not play without. Beside each file, the page lists a loader and a Minecraft version. When those lines agree, that pair is the install. When you are joining a modpack, the pack names the loader and you stop looking. Our pack already named NeoForge 1.21.1. How to install a Minecraft mod is the profile and the folder after the name is settled.

If those files name more than one loader, keep the loader that covers the mods you will not drop and remove the jar that names another. An author who ships two files has already done the port. Create’s 1.21.1 file is NeoForge. A 1.20.1 Create file that still says Forge is a different game version, not a reason to change this instance.

The API you can see

Forge and NeoForge carry their API inside the loader. Fabric does not. Fabric API is its own jar, so a Fabric folder has that extra file and a Forge folder does not. A missing Fabric API is a missing dependency. A shorter Forge folder is not a step you skipped. Most Fabric mods need it in the same folder.

The server has to match

A server runs one loader. Someone on Fabric cannot join a Forge or NeoForge server. Content mods, the ones that add blocks or machines, have to be on the server too, in the build that server names. Create machines are content. Sodium on a client is a renderer. A mod that only changes your own screen can stay on your machine. The server page is the list.

Copy the world before you swap loaders — keep a modded world from breaking. Jars for one loader will not run in the other, so the mods folder is replaced.

Fabric

Fabric is the small loader. Its shared library is a second jar, Fabric API. Best Minecraft mods still puts many performance mods on this loader first. Sodium and Lithium also ship NeoForge files for 1.21. I run Sodium + Iris on the NeoForge instance. Iris has a NeoForge 1.21.1 build. OptiFine crashes with this pack, so use Sodium instead — OptiFine vs Sodium.

Fabric is also the loader that usually has a build soon after a new Minecraft version. That speed matters when the mods you want have published a matching file. A Fabric profile with nothing you came to play is an empty win. I am not waiting on a new Minecraft number while Create Aeronautics is 1.21.1.

Forge

Forge is the original loader, in use since 2011. The reason to install it is a file that still says Forge. Old packs are the clear case, including the ones built for a Minecraft version that never received a port. You install Forge for that version, not the newest number in the launcher.

Forge was still publishing builds in 2026. A line that calls it finished is behind those feeds. A large content mod that only offers a Forge file is the same decision as an old pack. It is not my Create instance.

NeoForge

NeoForge is a fork of Forge. The NeoForged team announced it on 12 July 2023. In that post they said it was not yet a hard fork, and that breaking compatibility with Forge was still being discussed. There’s still no promise that a Forge jar loads on NeoForge.

What the downloads show instead is a separate file. Mods that support both publish a Forge jar and a NeoForge jar. Install the one that names the loader you are running. A shared history is not permission to drop the other jar in the folder. Best Minecraft mods already sends larger content mods toward NeoForge when that is the file they ship. Follow the file, including when it still says Forge.

Create 6.0.10 for mc1.21.1 is that file. Aeronautics 1.3.2 needs Sable on the same loader. That is the install, not a ranking.

A new Minecraft version

As of October 2026, Fabric supports 26.3 as stable, Forge has no recommended build yet, and NeoForge’s 26.3 builds are still beta. That changes fast.

If the mods you want have no file for that version, the newer game is a wait. Staying on the version those files name is the same rule as any other mismatch. The loader does not pull an old jar forward. Our pack stays on 1.21.1 until Create, Aeronautics, and Sable name something else.

Quilt, and a layer between them

Quilt is a fork of Fabric, and it keeps its profile. Some Fabric mods run on it. Not all of them do. It does not load a Forge jar or a NeoForge jar. I do not run Quilt.

Sinytra Connector is a different project. Its own site describes it as a way to run Fabric mods on NeoForge, and it asks you to check the mod before you trust the layer. A file the author published for your loader does not need that check. Connector is a workaround for a mod that never shipped the file you need, not a second way to ignore the name on the jar.

Switching loaders later is a different folder. The install page is that swap. The loader you keep is still the one the remaining files name. Mine name NeoForge.

Common questions

Can I use Fabric and Forge mods together?

No. Each mod only loads on the loader it was built for. Make one profile per loader and keep each mods folder separate.

Do Forge mods work on NeoForge?

Usually not on current versions. Most mods now publish separate files for Forge and NeoForge, so download the one that matches your loader.

Is Forge dead?

No, Forge is still getting builds in 2026. Use it when a mod or modpack you want only has a Forge version, which is common for older packs.

What is Fabric API and do I need it?

Fabric API is a mod, separate from the Fabric loader itself. Most Fabric mods need it, so put it in your mods folder alongside them.

Is Quilt better than Fabric?

Not necessarily. Quilt is a fork of Fabric that can run many Fabric mods, but it has a smaller community. It can't run Forge or NeoForge mods.

Should I use Fabric or Forge for Create?

Use NeoForge for Minecraft 1.21.1. Create 6 and Create Aeronautics are NeoForge mods on that version, so don't mix in Fabric files.
