Getting farmed by a Pharah while you’re stuck on Reinhardt? That’s a counter, and switching is often the fastest way out of a losing fight.

This guide covers what counters actually are, how to spot when you’re being countered, and when a swap is worth it (and when it isn’t). The interactive map below shows who beats who for every hero, and the comp builder tells you which team has the edge before the fight even starts. I play Zarya at Master rank, and these are the matchups I actually feel in games.

Who beats whom

Every hero, grouped by role. Hover or click a name to see its matchups: blue lines show who it counters, red lines show who counters it. Tanks are blue, damage orange, support green.

What a counter actually is

A counter isn’t magic. It’s one hero’s kit doing a job that another hero’s kit can’t handle. Most counters come down to a few things:

  • Range. If you have to walk up to hit someone and they can shoot you from across the map, you’re in trouble. Widowmaker and Ashe make life miserable for brawl heroes.
  • Mobility and flight. Pharah and Echo hang in the air where Reinhardt’s hammer simply can’t go.
  • Beams and shields. Zarya’s beam can’t be eaten by D.Va’s Defense Matrix, and her bubbles soak burst, which is why she’s a strong pick into dive.
  • Anti-heal. Ana’s grenade and Junker Queen’s knife stop a tank from healing through a fight.
  • Crowd control. Ana’s sleep dart or a well-timed stun can end a dive before it starts.

So when people say “X counters Y”, they usually mean X has a tool that takes away the thing Y needs to win.

My Zarya counters, from my own games

These are the matchups I actually feel on Zarya.

  • Lifeweaver is the one I hate most. His abilities counter Graviton Surge. Life Grip pulls the target right out of it, and the whole ult is gone.
  • Mauga is the other one. He melts Zarya at close range, and close range is where she wants to be.
  • When I swap off. Sometimes when the enemy runs two barrier tanks. Or when I just can’t build enough energy in a match.
  • Overrated counter: Reinhardt. People call him a Zarya counter, but his range is low, so he is not that hard to deal with.
  • My past mistake. I used to grav the tanks, or hold grav for too long. Graviton Surge is game-changing and one of the best ults in the game, so it needs to land on the heroes that decide the fight, and it needs to actually get used.

Signs you’re being countered

You don’t need a chart to feel it. Some common signs:

  • You die before you even get to use your abilities.
  • You can’t reach the hero who keeps killing you.
  • Your big cooldown (shield, bubble, Matrix) does nothing against their damage.
  • The same enemy hero is on your kill feed every single fight.
  • You’re holding ult forever because you can never get close enough to use it.

If two or three of these sound familiar, it’s time to look at the map.

When to switch (and when not to)

Switching is a tool, not a reflex. Here’s how I think about it.

Switch when:

  • One enemy hero is clearly deciding every fight and you have a hero you can actually play into them.
  • You’ve lost a couple of fights the same way and nothing you change in your positioning helps.
  • Your whole team is struggling with the same thing. Sometimes the answer is a team-wide change, like everyone playing closer together against dive, not just one person swapping.

Don’t switch when:

  • You’re close to your ult. Swapping resets your charge, so think about it before throwing that away. The ult charge calculator and what ultimate economy is explain why that matters.
  • It’s the last fight and there’s no time to adjust.
  • The counter is a hero you’ve never played. A Widowmaker swap from someone who can’t hit shots just loses the fight differently.
  • You’re on a comfort pick that’s still winning duels. Being “countered on paper” doesn’t mean you’re losing.

The best swap is usually one you’re already comfortable on. One counter pick you can play well beats five you can’t.

How to use the counter map

To read the map, start with the three columns: tank, damage and support. That’s the same split covered in how Overwatch roles differ. Each hero is colored by role: blue for tanks, orange for damage and green for support.

Hover over or click any hero. Blue lines and the left list show who that hero counters. Red lines and the right list show who counters them. Each matchup comes with a short reason, like “beam goes through Matrix” or “sleep stops the dive”, so you know why it works.

Zoom with the buttons, your scroll wheel or a pinch, and drag empty space to move around. Reset view brings the whole roster back, and the search box jumps straight to a hero. On a keyboard, tab to a hero and press Enter to lock it.

Not every pair of heroes has a listed matchup. If one is missing, it just means there’s no clear counter there.

How to use the comp builder

The comp builder lets you set up two teams and see which side has the edge.

  1. Pick 5v5 or 6v6.
  2. Fill Team A and Team B with heroes.
  3. Read the score and the breakdown underneath.

5v5 follows Role Queue: 1 tank, 2 damage, 2 support. 6v6 follows Competitive Open Queue with a two-tank cap, so the builder won’t let you add a third tank. A team can’t have the same hero twice, but both teams can pick the same hero.

Want to experiment? Hit Random teams and it fills a legal 1-2-2 (5v5) or 2-2-2 (6v6) lineup for both sides and scores it.

Overwatch comp analyzer comparing two random 5v5 teams with the advantage score

The score is simple: +1 for every matchup your team wins, −1 for every one the other team wins, and ±0.5 for listed synergies. “Team A ahead, +4” means Team A wins more matchups on paper. It doesn’t know the map or how well anyone aims, so read the key matchups and synergies too. Classics like Zarya and Reinhardt, Nano Blade, or Mercy with Pharah show up there.

Quick tips for each role

Tank. Your swap is usually inside the tank column. I stay on Zarya into dive because Defense Matrix can’t eat the beam and bubbles soak burst. When I’m up against long range I can’t reach, I play around cover instead of walking down a hallway. How to play a brawl as a tank covers that walk-up. In 6v6 you have a second tank next to you, so a bad matchup hurts less. My full approach is in the Zarya guide.

Damage. You’re often the answer to a flyer or a sniper. If Pharah is running the sky, a hitscan you’re comfortable on is the swap. If the enemy tank keeps living, check whether your team needs anti-heal.

Support. Watch out for the save that ruins your team’s ult. Life Grip can save a teammate from a Graviton Surge, so hold it for the enemy Zarya’s ult. Ana’s sleep and grenade are some of the strongest counter tools in the game, so use them on the hero that’s actually winning fights.

Everyone. If you’re calling the shots, name one target. “Sleep the Ball” is much better than “they have so much dive.” How to shotcall one target explains how. And if a game got away from you, how to review an Overwatch loss helps you find the fight that decided it. You can also check exact damage numbers with the damage breakpoint tool.

Before you queue, warm up on the hero you’ll actually play. There are extra aim drills on Play.

Heroes change with patches, so check the latest notes now and then. Season 5: A Grim Doctrine and the October 13 hotfix cover the most recent changes.

Common questions

How do Overwatch counters work?

A counter is a hero whose kit does a specific job against another hero. Long range beats a hero who has to walk up to you. Defense Matrix can't eat a beam. Anti-heal shuts down a tank who lives on self-sustain. Dive punishes a support standing alone.

Are Overwatch counters based on win rates?

No. Blizzard doesn't publish a counter table, so the map is built from hero kits and common community knowledge. The comp builder score just adds up those matchups and synergies. It's a hint, not a win percentage.

What is the difference between 5v5 and 6v6 counters?

5v5 Role Queue is one tank, two damage and two support. 6v6 Competitive is Open Queue with a two-tank cap. The matchups are the same, but a second tank means there's someone else to peel for the hero being countered.

Who counters Zarya?

Lifeweaver can pull a target right out of Graviton Surge with Life Grip. Long-range heroes and flyers like Widowmaker, Ashe, Pharah and Echo stay where the beam can't reach. Ana's sleep and grenade punish a Zarya who walks in carelessly.

Does Sombra still counter dive after her support rework?

Yes, in a different way. Hack is gone, but Weaken and EMP still hurt heroes like Wrecking Ball and Doomfist who rely on their cooldowns, and she now heals with Hotfix.

Should I always switch to the counter?

No. Only switch if you can actually play the answer. A Widowmaker swap from someone who never plays her usually loses more fights than it wins.

What does the comp builder score mean?

Each matchup your team wins is +1, each one the other team wins is -1, and each listed synergy is worth half a point. A higher score means more matchups on paper. It doesn't know the map or how well anyone aims.
