The GeForce RTX 5090 is NVIDIA’s desktop flagship for the Blackwell generation: 32 GB GDDR7, 575 W total graphics power, official starting price $1999, available January 30 (2025) on NVIDIA’s product page. I do not own one. I play on a desktop RTX 5080 with a Ryzen 9 9950X3D2, on a 1080p 240 Hz and a 1440p 155 Hz monitor — so this page is researched, not hands-on. For the card I actually run, see the RTX 5080 gaming PC build.

US search interest for “rtx 5090” stayed high in my GPU Trends sample (mean about 40, anchored next to the 5070). Demand is real. Whether you need the flagship is a different question.

Numbers below come from NVIDIA’s official card pages (checked 3 Nov 2026). Memory bandwidth for the 5090 and 4090 is from the compare block on the 5090 page. No FPS charts, no invented “X% faster.”

Who should buy the 5090

The 5090 makes sense when you actually need the flagship sheet:

  • 4K with path tracing / heavy ray tracing, where 32 GB and the 512-bit bus are the point, not a flex.
  • Creators exporting large timelines or rendering scenes that fill mid-range VRAM.
  • Local AI / large models that benefit from 32 GB on one card.
  • A PSU, case, and wallet that already clear a 575 W board and a 1000 W system rec.

NVIDIA’s Technology Support block on the 5090 page lists DLSS 4 (Super Resolution, DLAA, Ray Reconstruction, Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation), Reflex 2 Low Latency Mode, and Frame Warp marked Coming Soon. Fifth-gen Tensor cores are listed at 3352 AI TOPS; fourth-gen RT cores at 318 TFLOPS. Encoders: 3× 9th-gen NVENC and 2× 6th-gen NVDEC. For what those features do in practice, see what is DLSS and what is frame generation.

Who should buy a 5080 instead

That is closer to my desk. Competitive play on 1080p 240 Hz and 1440p 155 Hz does not need 32 GB or a 575 W board. The desktop RTX 5080 ships with 16 GB GDDR7, 360 W, and an 850 W system recommendation, from $999 on NVIDIA’s page — half the flagship launch price on paper. Full build notes: RTX 5080 gaming PC.

If you are still choosing a tower, the custom gaming PC and graphics cards hub pages keep the rest of the stack in one place. A 4K gaming monitor only helps if the card can fill it; the port ceiling on both 50-series cards lists 4K at 480 Hz or 8K at 165 Hz with DSC, which is what the connectors can send, not a promise of frame rate.

Power, case, and connectors

From NVIDIA’s 5090 specs table (checked 3 Nov 2026):

  • TGP: 575 W
  • Required system power: 1000 W (footnote: minimum based on a PC with a Ryzen 9 9950X; recommend a PCIe CEM 5.1 compliant PSU)
  • Prepare your system section: also prints 850 W Minimum, with “a higher power rating may be required depending on your system configuration”
  • Connectors: 4× PCIe 8-pin via the adapter in the box, or 1× 600 W PCIe Gen 5 cable
  • FE size: length 304 mm, width 137 mm, 2-slot; Prepare your system also says plan clearance for a 3-slot card (61 mm) and about 1.4 in (36 mm) extra for power cables, with three unused expansion slots for airflow
  • Max GPU temperature: 90°C
  • Displays: 3× DisplayPort + 1× HDMI; max digital 4K 480 Hz or 8K 165 Hz with DSC

Run your own parts through the PSU wattage calculator before you trust a sticker. Partner cards are often longer or thicker than the FE — measure the case.

Laptop confusion

A “RTX 5090 Laptop GPU” in a thin 16-inch or a mini PC is a different, wattage-capped chip. This page is the desktop GeForce RTX 5090 only. If a listing says “up to RTX 5090” on a family page, walk — you are buying one SKU.

Bottom line

The RTX 5090 is the desktop flagship: 21,760 CUDA cores, 32 GB GDDR7, 575 W, from $1999. Buy it when that sheet matches the work. For the competitive 1080p / 1440p setup I actually use, the RTX 5080 is the card on the desk. More graphics-card pages: hub · GPU compare.

Common questions

Who needs an RTX 5090 instead of an RTX 5080?

Buyers who need 32 GB of GDDR7 for 4K path tracing, heavy creative workloads, or large AI models. I play competitive games on 1080p 240 Hz and 1440p 155 Hz with a desktop RTX 5080, so the 5090 is more card than that use case needs.

What power supply does an RTX 5090 need?

NVIDIA's specs table lists 1000 W required system power (footnote based on a Ryzen 9 9950X). The Prepare your system section also prints 850 W Minimum and notes a higher rating may be needed. Prefer a quality 1000 W unit with a native 600 W PCIe Gen 5 cable when you can.

How much VRAM does the RTX 5090 have?

32 GB of GDDR7 on a 512-bit bus, with 1792 GB/sec of memory bandwidth on NVIDIA's official page.

How big is the RTX 5090 Founders Edition?

NVIDIA lists the FE at 304 mm long, 137 mm wide, and 2-slot. The Prepare your system page also asks you to plan three unused expansion slots and 3-slot clearance (61 mm) plus cable space for airflow.

Is a laptop RTX 5090 the same as the desktop card?

No. Laptop RTX 5090 chips are cooler-limited and wattage-capped for notebooks. This page covers the desktop GeForce RTX 5090 only.

How does the RTX 5090 compare to the RTX 4090 on paper?

Official NVIDIA numbers: the 5090 has 32 GB GDDR7 (512-bit, 1792 GB/sec) at 575 W from $1999; the 4090 has 24 GB GDDR6X (384-bit, 1008 GB/sec) at 450 W from $1599. This page does not invent FPS charts.

Do you own an RTX 5090?

No. I play on a desktop RTX 5080 with a Ryzen 9 9950X3D2. Every 5090 number here is from NVIDIA's product page, researched, not hands-on.
