Gaming DAC (2026): skip it for a dongle headset, buy Fulla or a $9 dongle if the jack is the problem
A 2026 DAC guide that names Schiit Fulla at $109 and Apple's USB-C headphone adapter at $9 — and tells you when a Cloud III or PRO X 2 does not need either.

Wondering if a DAC will make your headset sound better? Most people with a current gaming headset do not need one. If your PC has no jack, Apple’s USB-C to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter at $9 does the job. If you want a desk box with a mic input, optical in, and a real volume knob, get a Schiit Fulla at $109 (ESS ES9018, up to 300 mW into 16 Ω). I don’t use a separate DAC in my own setup.

When you should not buy one
- USB or 2.4 GHz headset. Cloud III’s USB dongle and the PRO X 2 already convert. A second box is not in that path.
- The wired set is already loud and clean. The motherboard jack is doing the job.
- You wanted clearer footsteps. That is mix and EQ, not a converter. Game EQ.
When you should
- The PC has no 3.5 mm jack and you own a wired headphone. $9 Apple dongle.
- The jack is noisy (coil whine in the cups that follows GPU load). A USB box moves the conversion off the motherboard.
- The headphone is high-ohm and quiet from the jack. Fulla’s 300 mW into 16 Ω (Schiit’s number) is the desktop amp step.
- The boom must share the same USB path. Fulla is the $109 answer that actually prints a mic jack.
A USB microphone is a different product. Do not buy a DAC to fix a headset mic you could replace with a $100 boom.
Fulla, briefly
Schiit sells it as a DAC/amp for gaming and comms. ESS ES9018, Alps pot, optical in, preamp out, extra 5 V USB if the host port is weak. Designed and built in the US on their page. That is the listing.
Apple dongle, briefly
Nine dollars. USB-C to 3.5 mm. No mic-in for a TRRS boom unless the adapter and the OS both treat it as a headset jack — confirm on your machine before you assume a Cloud III boom will talk through it. Many people use it as a headphone-only jack. That is still a valid $9 fix.

Sample rate, exclusive mode, and when to stop
Windows will enumerate a USB DAC as a new output. Set the game and Discord to that device, not to a leftover Bluetooth pair. 48 kHz is the usual game rate.
Exclusive / WASAPI modes can block Discord from sharing the device. If you talk and play, shared mode is the less exciting, correct answer.
A surround button on a $109 box is still a remix. Leave it off in a shooter until stereo is settled. The 5080’s HDMI / DP audio path to a monitor speaker is a different, worse output — use the DAC or the headset, not the panel.
It changes whether a wired headphone has a jack.
What the listing has to print
- USB-C vs USB-A vs optical
- Headphone jack size (3.5 vs 6.35)
- Whether a mic input exists
- Output power into a named ohm load
- Today’s price
Then go back to the headset. A $109 box will not fix cups you cannot wear.
Common questions
What is the best gaming DAC in 2026?
For most people, none. If you need one, the Schiit Fulla ($109) is a great desktop DAC/amp with a mic input, and Apple's $9 USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter is enough if your device just lacks a headphone jack.
Does a gaming headset need a DAC?
No, most don't. USB and wireless headsets already have a DAC inside, and regular 3.5 mm gaming headsets run fine from your PC's jack. A DAC/amp helps with hard-to-drive wired headphones.
Is a gaming DAC better than a regular DAC?
No. 'Gaming' is mostly branding. What matters is the converter, the amplifier power, the outputs and whether it has a mic input if you need one.
Do I need a DAC for a wireless headset?
No. Your wireless headset's dongle and headset already handle the conversion and amplification, so an external DAC won't be in the signal path.
What should I look for in a DAC for gaming?
Look for an input your PC has (USB-C or USB-A), a headphone output that fits your cable, enough power for your headphones, and a mic input only if your mic plugs in there.
Will a DAC improve footsteps in games?
No. A DAC doesn't change the game's sound mix. To hear footsteps better, adjust the game's audio settings and EQ first.
