Shopping for an AMD gaming CPU and seeing “X3D” everywhere? Here’s where to start: if your graphics card isn’t the limit, get the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. AMD’s product page lists 8 cores, 16 threads, 4.7 GHz base, up to 5.2 GHz boost, 96 MB L3, 120 W, and socket AM5. AMD’s US shop lists it at $479. The X3D letters mean extra cache, but always check the exact model name on the listing.
I run an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 next to an RTX 5080, on a 1080p 240 Hz and a 1440p 155 Hz monitor. That pairing, a stacked-cache chip with a current high-end card, is the setup behind this guide.
Below you’ll find a table of the actual chips, the socket each one needs, and a test you can run in five minutes. Street prices move, so official shop prices are labeled as such.
Quick picks
- The gaming X3D to buy first: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D. 8C/16T, Zen 5, 96 MB L3, 120 W, AM5, no cooler in the box. Official US shop price $479.
- The previous-gen 8-core that is still a real X3D: Ryzen 7 7800X3D. 8C/16T, Zen 4, 4.2 GHz base / up to 5.0 GHz boost, 96 MB L3, 120 W, AM5. Buy it only if the current price is clearly below the 9800X3D and the board already lists it. Amazon search
- The 16-core if you also create on the same PC: Ryzen 9 9950X3D. 16C/32T, 4.3 GHz base / up to 5.7 GHz boost, 128 MB L3, 170 W, AM5. Official page: AMD 9950X3D. Amazon search
The short version: name the model, confirm AM5 + BIOS, then spend the rest of the money on the card. See custom gaming PC and the PC build guides.
Comparison table
Cache and clocks are AMD’s published figures. “Total cache” in AMD press material for the 9800X3D is 104 MB (L2 + L3). The L3 number on the spec sheet is 96 MB.

What 3D V-Cache actually is
Cache is the small fast memory on the processor. A game keeps asking for the same instructions. More L3 on the chip means fewer trips to system RAM. .
AMD’s 31 October 2024 launch note for the 9800X3D says the second-generation stack puts the 64 MB cache die under the cores so the CCD sits closer to the cooler. AMD’s own averages in that release: about 8% faster than the previous generation in their game set, and they call out higher 1% lows in some titles. Those are AMD’s numbers, on AMD’s test beds. They are not a promise for your card or your game.
The extra cache helps when:
- The graphics card is waiting (usage sitting well below 99% in a fight)
- The work is a game, a sim, or another title that thrashes the same data
- You play at a resolution the card can already fill — for me that is a 1440p 155 Hz screen
It does not help when the card is already maxed, or when the job is a long render that wants cores and clocks more than stacked L3. AMD has said for years that content-creation work does not get the same lift. That is why the 9950X3D exists as a separate, hotter, more expensive chip.
The five-minute test before you buy
- Open the game you actually play, on the settings you actually use.
- Watch GPU usage and frame rate in the same scene.
- Drop one resolution step. 1440p to 1080p, or 4K to 1440p.
- If the frame rate jumps and the card was already near full, the card is the limit. Put the money there. See best CPU for gaming only after that.
- If the frame rate barely moves and the card sits low, the processor is the limit. Now the X3D letters are the feature to pay for.
I play on a 1080p 240 Hz and a 1440p 155 Hz monitor, driven by an RTX 5080. High refresh rates are where a CPU limit shows up. That is why an X3D chip is in the box, and why I would not buy one first for a 4K-only machine.
Ryzen 7 9800X3D
This is the current 8-core gaming part. Official extras that matter on a listing:
- Socket AM5, DDR5, officially up to DDR5-5600 in the 2-DIMM configs AMD prints
- PCIe 5.0, 28/24 native lanes
- Unlocked (AMD’s first fully unlocked X3D, per the launch release)
- No cooler in the box. AMD recommends a liquid cooler for optimal performance. Tjmax 95°C
- Boxed PID 100-100001084WOF
Pros
- The cache and clocks on one 8-core chip, without paying for 16 cores you will not use in a match
- Drop-in on a current AM5 board once the BIOS list includes it
- Official $479 is a known number you can compare to a prebuilt
Cons
- Cooler is extra. Budget that, or the chip will just thermal-throttle itself
- $479 official is a lot next to a mid-range card. If the GPU is the limit, this chip is the wrong half of the spend
- Street prices swing. Make sure it’s the boxed WOF part, not a tray chip without a warranty story

Ryzen 7 7800X3D
Same core count, same 96 MB L3, same 120 W, older Zen 4 clocks (4.2 / 5.0 GHz). It is the chip a lot of 2023–2025 builds already have.
Buy it used or on a steep discount when a 9800X3D is the alternative. Do not buy it at the same price as the newer 8-core. Confirm the motherboard QVL / BIOS list; AM5 is the same socket, the microcode is not automatic.
Amazon search for 7800X3D · AMD product page
Ryzen 9 9950X3D
16 cores, 32 threads, 170 W, 128 MB L3, boost to 5.7 GHz. AMD’s page titles it as a gaming and content-creation processor. That is the honest use: one machine that plays and also encodes or renders.
It is the wrong default for a gaming-only RTX 5080 PC. You pay for cores, a 170 W cooler, and a louder box. If that is your week, buy it. If you only queue matches, the 9800X3D is the chip.

Cooler, RAM, and the rest of the box
AMD does not put a cooler in the 9800X3D, 7800X3D, or 9950X3D boxes. The 8-core parts are 120 W; the 9950X3D is 170 W. AMD’s 9800X3D page says “liquid cooler recommended for optimal performance” and Tjmax 95°C. A leftover 120 mm tower from a 65 W chip is how you buy boost that never shows up.
RAM: DDR5, two sticks. AMD prints DDR5-5600 for the common 2× single-rank / 2× dual-rank configs. EXPO is on the spec sheet.
The 5080 next to this chip wants an 850 W system PSU (NVIDIA). Do not spend $479 on the CPU and then starve the card. Custom PC is the full list. CPU cooler type if you are still choosing air vs AIO.
What I would not do
- Buy a 9950X3D “for gaming” and then leave 8 cores idle all week
- Pair a 9800X3D with a weak GPU because a chart said the CPU is the most important part
- Move an AM4 cooler and an AM4 brain to this socket
I run an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 next to a 5080 because the 240 Hz screen can still leave GPU usage on the table in some fights. . No invented fps.
What the listing has to print
Ignore “best gaming CPU” until the page states:
- The full model, letters included. “Ryzen 7 9000” is a family. 9800X3D is the chip.
- L3 cache in megabytes. 96 MB on the 8-core X3D parts, 128 MB on the 9950X3D.
- Socket AM5 and a motherboard that lists this exact model in the current BIOS.
- TDP and whether a cooler is in the box (on these three, it is not).
- Today’s price next to the graphics card. A $479 CPU beside a weak card is the same mistake as a bad prebuilt.
Then go back to the gaming mouse and the monitor. The chip does not aim, and it does not draw the picture.
Common questions
What does X3D mean on an AMD CPU?
X3D means the chip has AMD's 3D V-Cache, extra L3 cache stacked on top. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D has 96 MB of L3, and that extra cache is what boosts performance in many games.
What is the best AMD X3D CPU for gaming in 2026?
The Ryzen 7 9800X3D. It has 8 cores, 16 threads, 96 MB of L3 cache and boosts up to 5.2 GHz on AM5. Only go for a 16-core 9950X3D if you also render or stream heavily on the same PC.
Does an X3D CPU increase FPS?
Yes, when your CPU is the bottleneck. A quick test is to lower your resolution: if FPS barely changes, the CPU is holding you back and an X3D chip will help; if FPS jumps, your graphics card is the limit.
Is an X3D CPU worth it for 4K gaming?
Usually not as your first upgrade. At 4K your graphics card does most of the work, so a GPU upgrade will help more. X3D chips shine at 1440p and 1080p with high refresh rates, which is why I pair mine with high-refresh 1440p monitors.
Do I need a 9950X3D for gaming?
No. The 8-core 9800X3D gives you the same gaming benefit from the cache. Pay for the 16-core 9950X3D only if you also do rendering, video encoding or other heavy work on the same machine.
Will a 9800X3D fit my motherboard?
Yes, if you have an AM5 board with a BIOS that supports it. Compatible chipsets include B650, B850, X670 and X870 among others; check your motherboard's CPU support list and update the BIOS before installing.
