Want to save that clutch play? Game recording software captures the picture your game is already drawing, and the best recorder to try first is the one already on your PC. Want to save that clutch play? The best recorder to try first is the one already on your PC. Here are the three I’d pick, from zero-install to full studio.

A clip can show whether your aim training paid off in the match, or whether that Fire Breath actually landed. Stick to one recorder, though. A second one just adds load.

Game Bar first

Windows logo key + G opens Xbox Game Bar. Microsoft’s capture help: use the Capture widget, or Win+Alt+R to start and stop a recording.

It’s the same overlay I use to read FPS in my other guides. No download. No scene tree. If the clip is “the last fight,” you are done.

Limits: it is a Windows overlay, not a production switcher. If you need a facecam over a 240 Hz play panel, that is OBS.

NVIDIA App if you have the card

I have a GeForce RTX 5080. The NVIDIA App is the current companion: Game Ready drivers, overlay, ShadowPlay recording.

NVIDIA’s page lists:

  • Instant Replay — save the last 30 seconds

  • Manual record up to 8K HDR at 30 fps, or 4K HDR at 120 fps, “minimal impact”

  • Highlights can auto-save clutch moments

Use the card encoder, not a software x264 encode, if the point is to keep 240 Hz playable. How to increase FPS: counter off, then on, same spot.

Instant Replay is the right feature for “that Zarya grav I want to see.” You were not recording. The buffer was.

OBS when the overlay is not enough

OBS Studio — free, open source. Runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.

What OBS can do:

  • Scenes made of sources (game, window, display, webcam, capture card, browser)
  • Audio mixer with filters (noise gate, suppression, gain, VST)
  • Hotkeys, Studio Mode, Multiview
  • Plugins / Lua / Python

Open this when you need a second audio track, a webcam, a capture card, or a stream. The tool is still the named one.

OBS’s Windows gaming-features note: Game DVR / background recording and ShadowPlay can eat NVENC sessions. Consumer NVIDIA GPUs are limited (OBS says two sessions). Running two recorders at once can stop OBS from recording, so turn off Game Bar and Instant Replay first.** Turn Game Bar background record and NVIDIA Instant Replay off before you press Start Recording in OBS.

Game Mode: leave it on.

What you need saved

  • Last 20 seconds of a fight — NVIDIA Instant Replay, or Game Bar clip
  • A full Blitz / ranked game — NVIDIA manual record or OBS, one audio track
  • Facecam + game + Discord — OBS, two sources, two tracks
  • A console through a capture card — OBS. I play on PC.

A Minecraft airship clip is a long, quiet take. Instant Replay may miss the start of the crash. Hold a manual record if the contraption is the point. Create pack.

After you save

Watch the clip on another screen if you can — not through the same adrenaline. For aim, write whether the motion matched the range block. For Evoker, write whether the kick was late. Rewatch when you’ve calmed down. That’s when you actually spot the mistake.

The three official doors above cover the desk I have.

Common questions

Do I need to install game recording software?

Usually not. Windows Game Bar (Win+G) and the NVIDIA App's Instant Replay can already save clips. Install OBS only if you want a webcam, separate audio tracks or streaming.

What is OBS Studio?

OBS Studio is free, open-source software for recording and streaming. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and lets you build scenes with your game, webcam, overlays and audio filters.

Does recording gameplay lower FPS?

Yes, a little. GPU encoders like NVIDIA's ShadowPlay are built for minimal impact, so the drop is usually small. Check your FPS with recording on and off in the same scene to see what it costs on your PC.

Can I run OBS and ShadowPlay at the same time?

You shouldn't. Both can use your NVIDIA encoder, and running them together can make OBS fail to record, so turn off the overlay you're not using.

How do I open Xbox Game Bar?

Press the Windows key + G. To start or stop recording right away, press Windows + Alt + R.

What's the best software for streaming games?

OBS Studio. It's free and lets you build scenes with your game, webcam, alerts and chat, which built-in overlays like Game Bar can't do.
