Minecraft Nether coordinates

Divide Overworld X and Z by 8 (and round down) to get Nether X and Z. Y stays the same. Overworld 1056, 78, −784 becomes Nether 132, 78, −98. Build your Nether portal there and the two will link.

Nether coordinates

132 / 78 / -98

Divide X and Z by 8 and round down; Y stays the same. Linking still depends on the search radius around that point.

The 1:8 map

Nether X,Z = floor(Overworld X,Z ÷ 8)
Overworld X,Z = Nether X,Z × 8
Y′ = Y

Negative coordinates round down too, so −98.5 becomes −99. In my own world we mostly travel by airship in the Create Aeronautics pack, but portals still matter for the Nether.

Common questions

What is the Nether to Overworld coordinate ratio?

It's 1:8. Every block in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld on the X and Z axes, while Y stays the same, so Overworld 800, 64, 800 matches Nether 100, 64, 100.

How do you convert Overworld coordinates to the Nether?

Divide X and Z by 8 and round down. Negative numbers round down too, so −9 becomes −2, not −1.

Why don't my Nether portals link correctly?

A portal links to the nearest existing portal within a search radius. If another portal is closer, you'll come out there, so build your portal at the exact converted coordinates.

Does the Nether coordinate ratio work on Bedrock?

Yes, the 1:8 ratio is the same on Bedrock, though portal linking ranges differ slightly. I play Java 1.21.1, which this calculator is built around.

Does the End use the same coordinate ratio?

No. The End doesn't use the 1:8 ratio. This calculator is only for converting between the Nether and the Overworld.
