How to choose a scope
How to pick the right scope for your fights: iron sights, red dots, 2–3x and high zoom, with Battlefield 6 and Black Ops 6 examples.

Choose a scope by the distance of your fights, not the weapon’s name or the biggest zoom on the list. Close fights want iron sights or a 1x dot. Medium fights want a low zoom. Only fights across open ground need high magnification.
I play Overwatch as Zarya (Master), so there’s no optic for me to pick. For the bigger picture, see Battlefield vs Call of Duty: one series is mostly big maps and the other mostly tight ones.
| Where most fights are | Sight | What you pay |
|---|---|---|
| Close (rooms, BO6 6v6) | Iron sights or 1x dot | Nothing — keep the view wide |
| Medium (mixed, Warzone mid) | 2x–3x or a low zoom | Less periphery, kick looks bigger |
| Long (ridges, Battlefield flags) | Higher magnification | Slow turn, tunnel, miss the flank |
| Mixed in one life | Hybrid (dot + zoom) | You must switch before the fight |
| Overwatch Zarya | No scope — beam | Range and tracking, not zoom |
What zoom costs
Zoom makes a far target bigger. It also takes things away. You see less of the screen around the target, so players on the side are easier to miss. Every small kick looks bigger, which makes recoil control harder to read. In many games a bigger scope also takes longer to aim with. More zoom is a trade, not an upgrade.
Pick by distance
The question is where most of your fights happen, not where the longest one did.
- Close: iron sights or a red dot. SMGs live here. A zoomed optic on an SMG is usually a mistake.
- Medium: a low zoom (lists keep saying about 2x–3x). Enough to mark a chest, not enough to lose the doorway.
- Long: more magnification, and you accept the tunnel.
- Mixed: a hybrid, switched when you move, not when someone is already shooting.
Two sights with the same zoom can still feel different. A thick frame hides the target. Keep the one that blocks less.
Hybrid, thermal, specials
A hybrid is two views on one weapon. If the zoomed view is up when a player appears around a corner, you start with the wrong sight. Switch when you enter a new area.
Thermal sights make players stand out by heat. They help in smoke and darkness. They usually come with zoom and a darker view, so they fit medium and long fights better than rooms. Treat them as a tool for a map, not a default.
Battlefield 6 and Black Ops 6
Battlefield 6 launched 10 October 2025. Large maps, vehicles, flags. A low or medium zoom suits many rifles there. High zoom suits a player who stays back and watches open ground.
Black Ops 6 launched 25 October 2024. Activision listed 16 maps at launch: 12 core 6v6 and 4 Strike. Most of those fights stay close, so a dot or iron sights is the common answer. Warzone mixes close and long fights, so a low zoom is more useful there.
Test it before you commit
Take the weapon into the range, if the game has one. Aim at a close target and turn to a second one. Then try a far target. If the close turn feels slow and cramped, the zoom is too much for how you play.
The scope follows the map. The map follows the session. I play a beam.

Common questions
What scope should I use in a shooter?
Use the scope that matches the distance of most of your fights. Pick iron sights or a red dot for close range, a 2x to 3x scope for medium range, and higher zoom only for long open sightlines.
Is a higher zoom scope always better?
No. More zoom makes far targets bigger, but it shrinks your field of view, exaggerates recoil and often slows your aim-down-sights speed.
What is a hybrid sight?
It's a sight with two modes, usually a red dot and a magnified scope, that you can switch between. It's great for mixed ranges, but switch before the fight starts.
Should I put a scope on an SMG?
Usually no. SMGs are for close fights, where a red dot or iron sights give you a wider view and faster aim than a magnified scope.
Which Overwatch heroes have a scope?
Widowmaker and Ana are the main scoped heroes. Most others, including Zarya, who I play, aim without zoom, so scope choice matters more in games like Battlefield 6 and Black Ops 6.
